Doomed Love: Sensory And Bittersweet Drama From KFI
samxxxul1 September 2023
"More than kisses, letters mingle souls"

Here we have letters, tape recorder and a sea. I want to begin the review with the quotes by metaphysical poet John Donne. This is one of those melancholic films that will evoke a ruminative feeling.

As 2023 is preparing to draw it's curtains with 4 months to the end of the year, i am feeling so ecstatic to start the month of September with Sapta Sagaradaache Ello Side A. Being a huge fan of the RRR (Rakshit Shetty-Rishab Shetty-Raja B Shetty) of Kannada cinema, i have immense gratitude for the triumvirate. They have gone all out to be part of Good cinema for more than a decade with a number of successes and having a huge share of buzz over the years. There can be no negativity made about the RRR's when it comes to their contribution to Kannada Cinema. In addition, Rakshit and Rishab backing indie projects like Saakutumba Sametha and the upcoming Shivamma and Pedro to that extent going all out, I really have to give them the utmost respect. I have greatly apotheosized them and if you have a moment do peep my reviews on this site for Kantara, GGVV, 777 Charlie and Varthamana. I will also, recommend cinephiles to hunt down MS Prakash Babu's Attihannu Mattu Kanaja and check out Pinki Elli? (2023).

Coming back, i have to say right from the first frames, accompanied by the brilliant title track the movie is packed with quintessence of everything cinema. In principle, I got an idea what would happen in this film going by the trailer - a doomed loved odyssey that changes lives of the leads due to the unfortunate turns of fate. I was so right, but let me tell you that SSE is a bittersweet love story, but so much more below the surface like how the sea.

At the very beginning of the film, post title credits, we see a couple driving along a quite street as the guy in full adrenaline rush behind wheel keeps going fast while the girl keeps reminding him to halt. We are now introduced to Manu (Rakshit) and Priya (Rukimi Vasanth) as it establishes the character trait for both. The first half of the film has lot of moments between Manu and Priya with usual lovesick conversations, banters and it holds on really well. They have dreams, hoping to seek a bright future, and settle down in a house located near the beach which is chosen as the background and a leitmotif - the feeling of tranquility. Manu is framed to cover up for a mess, he accepts the offer, some money and to do some time in jail for 3 months. Manu gets a buddy in jail while Priya longs to see him, this separation is unbearable for both with little room for hope till the pre interval. I would like to say a more, reveal about what happens next but don't want to spoil it for other viewers or readers.

Coming to performances, i loved the Priya who is an aspiring singer, a lovesick and talks endlessness about the sea and spends time by yearning for Manu. She is forced to constantly be disappointed with things going around her but does not lose hope. Especially the grief and the emptiness in her character and, above all, to not let go of her dreams is showcased without a very little overkill. At some point, you understand that she need these dreams fulfilled. I love how she always takes an upper hand when it comes to being mature and this is established in the beginning of the movie.

Rakshit Shetty as Manu did a great job, he is someone who doesn't have any buddies or bar friends, living a boring life and there is nothing remarkable about him. Everyday he works as a driver and yearns for Priya and in all this routine he dreams to fulfill her wishes which brings more trouble. He was so damn good in the jail sequences longing for escape in the grip of alienation and is backstabbed twice.

Also, Pavitra Lokesh did a fine job as Pirya's mother, she gets one of my favorite moments in the 2nd half. Knowing what her daughetr wants, sincere and respecting her feelings she talks about grief, the unbearable pain but the pleasure to overcome it.

Now the background score by Charan Raj who is once again at the top of his game. The musical world is an integral part of storytelling and emerges as a separate character in the film which is highly evocative with a lot of aesthetic impact in the musical cues. The entire movie benefited from the bgm as it is promised in its title and works like a mood piece to accentuate the experience.

I applaud Director Hemanth Rao's decision to avoid descending into the backstory of Manu and Priya with proceedings of how all it began, how they fell in love and cut to flashback with love songs and forced cringe cute moments. Sigh, a major relief and the tone of the film is maintained throughout the runtime, I am so glad that we won't be drawing comparison or find heavy similarity wth the films made by Rakshit's fellow countparts. The Drama here is undramatic rather than deliberate with a bit of influence from Hong Kong cinema and Thai new wave, which is by no means a let down.

Hemanth Rao did not inoculate with a happy ending, but does a good job in the pre climax sequence which really got me excited and the Side B tease is now awaited with applause. The reveal of Priya's marriage was shocking and I can't wait to see more of Katthe, Putti and the SSE world.

One of those movies that will stay with us for very long..
naveenbp216 September 2023
We walk out of cinema hall with a whole lot of emotions, there's a definite heart swell feeling, a sense of discomfort, bit of impatience and a lot of eagerness to watch side B already, in the midst of this 'sea' of emotions you are content to have witnessed such a beautiful poetic tale unfold in front of us . Happiness multiples for fans of Kannada movies :)

It's a movie we were longing for, we were deprived of for so long. It's a movie that we can celebrate, take pride of and definitely suggest to other language speakers. Certainly there was a similar impact after watching KGF/Kaantara but this touches you in a different way and leaves you with that feeling for very long.

Hats off to Hemanth & Rakshit to have that conviction and bring out a movie which isn't in sync with the ongoing trend. It again proves that movies have no boundaries and in essence it's always about telling a story and how good you are at that. So what makes SSE so special? It has literally ticked every box. It's so original, realistic, and organic all at same time. The writing is splendid, it's been long time watching such a mature and intense love story still fused with some fine heartwarming moments. This excellent writing is perfectly justified with brilliant acting, the chemistry between lead actors is so natural and intense that we can feel their every emotion very close, it completely captivates our consciousness and we start rooting for them from the word go. It's really hard to believe it's a debut movie for Rukmini, just too good! Maybe the pearl we have found in 'Sapta sagara'. Her makeup less face resembles the realism that movie carries in a perfect way.

The casting has worked out so well. Cinematography and production is par excellence which takes us to the world of Priya & Manu so seamlessly. And then our own Music Wiz Charan Raj elevates the movie to whole next level and doesn't let movie's intensity drop one bit at any point. Movie is so good that we wouldn't mind to ignore some very small issues (that if we find any) Altogether this is an exceptional piece of art that must be experienced on a big screen and let it be etched in our memories forever! Looking forward for side B!

7/10 - Only because it's Hemanth and Rakshit Combo, else...
sdadsasdasdasdasdasd1 September 2023
Hemanth made a little laggy movie in his GBSM, which I liked back in 2016. I saw that movie in theater with relatives. But, he is gotten used to making lag in the movies especially in the later part of the movie. He has some talent, I think he should write second half of the movie first instead of starting with the first half. So that he improves in it.

Rakshit has given cent percent for this movie. And I like his transformation in the climax. The last 5 mins of movie is written very well. The story seems to have inspiration from Shashwank Redemption, Shankar Nag's movie like Accident... And, little bit of Kanasugara. Just for fun. You can say that movie is consequences faced by hero which the movie Accident didn't show.

Coming to the music, Charan Raj is used to his type of movie. I was listening to Godhi Banna Sadarana Mykattu movie songs after reaching home, and I saw that Charan Raj should had given better music for the movie. It holds you, seems too unimaginative or lack of enthusiasm at times.

Rukmini, Avinash, Sharath, Achyuth have done well in their roles, which can't be questioned. My point is that Rakshit should start making movies with little punch through out, or cut off the length of the movie like the Hollywood ones. I watched this movie in First day, since I missed fan premiere. Couldn't sleep well in the night since I was to watch the movie today. But, Rakshit, I said you some thing. Just look in to it.

Again, it's Karnataka 's Malabar... Mallu style movie. Those who like Comercial movies of D and S, should not watch the masterpieces of Coastal Kannadigas.

First Half Done. Slow Pick Up, Rukmini Vasanth steals the show
rahuldkk1 September 2023
Finally we have a promising female lead in kannada industry who is pro with her acting skills.... Rukmini Vasanth take a bow mam.... Rakshit Have done a good job.... Hemanth as director is evolving. Initial movie feels slow but it will pick up the pace. BGM is to the point. I would say take a shot at this movie but it may not be the the cup of tea for each individual. The viewers will need a time to understand this love story.. Set up in 2010 year and the director showing the aspirations of to be wed new partners, their dreams will make think you know them. This is part 1, part 2 will release on Oct 20th.

An Amazing Poetic Love Story
varunkedige1 September 2023
How it rained in Bangalore and cools down the atmosphere, in the same way after watching the movie 'Sapta Sagaradache Ello - Side A', audience mind and body also cools down.

Manu and Priya live forever, opening everyone's hearts.

Rakshith's (as Manu) acting is at the peak and Rukmini's (as Priya) acting is top notch.

Hemanth Rao's strong poetic vision is fulfilled by his team member, cast and crew.

Special mention Charan Raj with his amazing background score and music direction and Advaita Gurumurthy with his beautiful cinematography. Every scene was a painting.

I recommend this movie to be watched on the big screen.

Waiting for the Side-B

All the best SSE team!

It's beautiful song, waiting for happy ending
vinnyh-161843 September 2023
Amazing work by all department Though movie feels laggy but doesn't affect much because of emotions, camera work and background score.

Every scene you keeps you interested waiting for twists but director has planned something else.

Don't expect anything based on trailer/ teaser.

Songs would rate ok ok Screen play, direction and acting is all wholesome package for moview lovers.

Love connection between lead charcters is something makes you feel about it.

Overall technically well executed movie Waiting for side B.

GIVE IT A TRY.

Note : this movie is only for people who likes to watch emotional romantic movies not comedy or mass content.

Beautiful Love Story we all needed
hariprasadm-243001 September 2023
I wanted to go for a comedy movie but then felt like watching Rakshit Shetty movie as he brings something good always. Oh boy! This movie was such a sweet ride. Film starts in its own pace Showing simple couple with simple needs and regular pleasant life. Then an unfortunate shortcut decision ruins everything. So relatable to regular life. Then it's an emotional journey of love between Manu (Rakshit) and Putti (Rukmini) that will melt your heart. The two leads acted so well that you will forget that it's a movie and start feeling as if it's really happening in their lives. Second half was incredible and makes you feel bad for the couple.

Everyone has something to relate to in their past or present from this movie. Beautiful cinematography and amazing BGM fully compliments the movie. Great work from the team! The RRRs never disappoints in providing the best work. Movie is an art in their hands.

Pure cinematic brilliance, superb acting and screenplay..Treat to Cinema lovers
jawaharn-573181 September 2023
Pure cinematic brilliance.. SSA is a poignant, immersive love story with its beautiful screenplay, acting and camera work is an absolute treat to the eyes. The whirlwind of emotions between 2 people in love is brilliantly woven into the simple storyline. The rigmarole Court procedures, Jail scenes etc provide backdrops that compliment the slow paced story. With such good movies the Kannada film industry is taking strides that can leapfrog it to its golden olden era.

I have to appreciate Rukmini Vasanth for her acting skills. She is such a natural.. Hope Kannada film industry retains such good talents and gives them good roles that showcases their performance. Just making the same old Machu, Long, Macho-ism movies will not get audiences attention.

Eagerly awaiting part 2 on Oct 20.

Good. But Not Great. It was nice experiencing a new type of LOVE Story
manu_gm1 September 2023
Music, Sound Design & Chemistry of Rakshith & Rukmini is just awesome. Charan Raj would never fail to entertain his fans. And Hemanth Rao tried his best to give a new genre to his show-reel, knowing or unknowingly his favorite genre "Thriller" is placed here and there.

Over all experience was good, but not great!. The screenplay was well played in the first half. Whereas, it was very much lag in the second half.

Instead of taking decision of making Side-B (Part-2), would have planned to reduce unnecessary sequences with long duration.

It was nice experiencing a new type of love story line And also, Can't conclude with the whole story plot, as the story is still incomplete. Let's watch Side-B.

Phenomenal Story
haro-800121 September 2023
A phenomenal movie that carries a concrete emotion between 2 beings. Witnessed this story 2 times as the it carries a strong bonding that makes us to live within it. U will feel your time was worth watching it. BGM of the movie is classic and it adds more value to the emotion that played around. Director has made his comeback so well with a lovley story. Actors have justified their characters by rendering more efforts in bringing their characters to live than being just acted. It will be worth a wait for the Side B of this movie for the director has built the hype with spoiler and as well as curiosity.

Wanted more of the lead pair!
SoumikBanerjee199630 September 2023
The film seems to shine the brightest when the lead pair graces the screen. Through their conversations, connections are built, empathy externalised, and we, the audience, feel an immeasurable adoration for the two main characters. As their love slowly blossoms, our attachment grows and reaches a certain stage when their eventual separation feels like an aching punishment to us.

Albeit, the rest of the screenplay doesn't play out in the same effective fashion. The writing struggles to maintain the same intensity and spirit whenever and wherever the lead pair goes on their individual paths, setting their eyes on their own objectives, especially with Manu; his side of the story set in prison largely came across as inferior and quite unsatisfactory as compared to the romantic track, which was magical!

I wish "Side B" would have more to do with the lead pair and their evolving relationship rather than these inconsequential matters.

Visually Stunning Yet Overhyped
Yerrigowda8 September 2023
While discussing this film, it's crucial to acknowledge the remarkable creative talents of director Hemanth Rao, who has truly showcased his prowess in both screenplay and cinematography. His unique vision shines through, making the movie a visual and narrative treat.

Moreover, it's worth noting the endearing and skillful portrayal of the heroine Rukmini, whose cute and justified acting adds charm to the story.

However, it's important to temper the overwhelming hype surrounding the film. While it excels in technical aspects, it doesn't quite deserve the excessive praise it's been receiving. The drawn-out story and pacing concerns detract from the overall experience.

This hyperbolic acclaim can inadvertently overshadow other deserving films, discouraging the industry from taking creative risks and exploring unique stories. It's a reminder that while the movie has its strengths, it's not the unparalleled masterpiece it's made out to be, and it's crucial to appreciate and support a diverse range of narratives in cinema.

The film draws you in as though it were deep sea, making you lost in its depth.

"Pain is the price we pay for love"

After watching 'Saptha Sagaradache Ello, I don't have just one emotion. It's mix of feelings, I guess. I typically avoid intense love story movies, even though I'm a sucker for love stories, because they often come with too much pain, and I'd rather not carry that with me. However, my all-time favourite romantic movie is '96' which is also quite intense.

The beauty of 'Saptha Sagaradache Ello' lies in the Manu-Priya pair. I don't think anyone can portray Rakshith Shetty or Rukmini Vasant on screen as effectively as they did. I felt the emotions they conveyed on screen; they made such a lovely pair. Throughout the film, I kept telling myself not to dwell on their separation. Their eyes were attractive and emotional at the same time, making us connect deeply with them. I can't get over their chemistry, and I don't want to forget this pair.

Regarding the music, Charan Raj intensified the scenes with his background music. He has a skill for heightening emotions to their peak. Just Loved it. One of my favourite songs from the film was 'Horata.' Rakshith Shetty & Rukmini Vasant performed superbly, and their chemistry, especially through their eyes, was a treat to watch. If I could ask the writer-director Hemant Rao one thing, it would be why this pair had to have such a sad ending. Why couldn't they return to a normal life? I know it's all fictional, but a part of me wishes for them to be together in the end. I really want them to be together, although it seems unlikely.

In the second half of the film, two scenes between Priya and her mother were particularly emotional, for me Rukimi vasanth's performances peaked here. The parallel scene in the climax, where they were parting ways but still shared the same pain, was moving. Likewise there are so many more scenes to tell about.

The movie left me with deep pain 💔. Love can bring immense pain, and enduring suffering for it is a form of love too. Film has too many metaphors, as we dig we get too many of them and their story and pain is just like deep of a sea. This film should touch many hearts.

Very well woven emotional roller coaster
sandeshgopalappa1 September 2023
Another gem of a Kannada movie.. thoroughly enjoyed the plot, script, acting and music. Keeping it real when it comes to cinema making was something we had to look out in other languages and I am happy that it is not the case anymore. Each character (other than the main male character) is nurtured and grown well and it does bring out the issues in our society. Looking fwd for Side B release in October. The chemistry of the couple on screen was intense and the heroine is brilliant and outstanding in her performance. They could have given a little background on Rakshit's character. Rest of the cast have done their bit. Overall, a very good movie to watch.

Must watch love story
puneethshetty1 September 2023
Pure Classiness is back. Classiness is all around this movie from movie making , cinematography , BGM, Story telling , everything about this movie is picture perfect... Moment the movie starts , it connects to the heart and the story refuses to disconnect even after 150mins... Best of acting , best of direction, best of music BGM and the numbers, best of cinematography, more than that the feel. The feel which touches and last long.

RukmiNi done a fabulous acting beats Rakshit emotions. Hemanth is turning to be a legendary director after GBSM and Kavludaari. The part B glimpse make us applaud at the end. Eager to wait part B and for chaitra achar.

Cinematography, Camera, music and colour pallette must be feel in theaters.

Happy to see the diversified stories in sandalwood Kudos team... 👍

A romantic story that connects your life
balchanderbhagwath3 September 2023
Very rarely we come across a movie that could resemble our personal life story and it depicts emotions that You have carried in the early stages and I can guarantee you will have wet eyes when you step out. Saptasagara aache yello has been weaved through strong bond of love, emotions and the true meaning of love. By far the best movie in the recent times and yet again Hemant Rao has proved that he is a great story teller whilst Rakshit and Vasundara Rao have just shown you don't need dialogues to act, just expressions. Music is outstanding, cinematography is fabulous, direction is splendid and heart tickling acting. 10 stars for the crew. Watched here in London.

Beautiful poetry on screen
nithinjayram1 September 2023
This is real cinema. Beautiful poetry on screen. Hemanth rao once again proved himself as a good filmmaker. His story and direction pulls you inside that romantic and yet conflicting world. Rukmini Vasanth has done a brilliant job, if you go to theatres for Rakshith shetty or anything else but after watching the film you just love Rukmini Vasnth. In th climax the way hero's violence scene is linked with heroine's wedding is amazing, thise cuts and edits brilliant. Please watch this in theatres and support because Side B ( part 2 ) will release within 2 months. I was really waiting for such a real cinematic experience from Kannada and Saptha Sagaradaache ello filled my thirst. Don't miss this in theatre.

(Dramatic) Kannada cinema is going places again! [+72%]
arungeorge137 October 2023
This is the kind of cinema that Lohithadas-Sibi Malayil combo (in Malayalam) would casually come up with, if it was in the late 80s/early 90s. It's a tragic love story of sorts, but one where the emotional heft overrides all else. We don't get to know the first instance of Manu (Rakshit Shetty) and Priya (Rukmini Vasanth) falling in love, but when we see them, they're already neck deep in it. And it's the performances of the leads that makes us buy into its profundity. We hop aboard their monotonously cute journey of finding a house before they get married, where their hopes and aspirations are also expounded. These scenes carry a subtle softness to them, which is accentuated by Advaitha Gurumurthy's balmy frames. Due to an unforeseen incident, Manu ends up in prison. That's when the couple's love is truly put to the test.

Charan Raj's superb compositions punctuate the proceedings, and while Manu and Priya remain the backbone of the film, we also get introduced to some subplots within the prison setup. While the screenplay and performances handle these portions well for the most part, for me, the finesse with which writer-director Hemanth M Rao tackled the first act was somewhat missing here. At this juncture, it even showed signs of becoming a proper "jail" movie, what with its internal warfare and politics. The climax took a turn that I wasn't fully anticipating, but I also quickly realized it was a prelude to Side B that was already in the works, all set to be unleashed shortly. It teased some of the scenes I wanted to get closure on, and I'm looking forward to it.

P. S - Rukmini Vasanth is FANTASTIC here!

Soul-Stirring Cinematic Experience
shettypratham2 September 2023
A flawless poetry on a big canvas. Absolutely beautiful movie driven by emotions throughout. Amazing writing and direction by Hemanth Rao. It has enough to keep you hooked throughout won't let you or give you time to predict what's going to happen next but holds you to flow through the story.

What an amazing acting by the leads. So powerful, their eyes spoke thousand words, the way both Rakshit and Rukmini have played with emotions is noteworthy. Subtle yet powerful.

These emotions were so extraordinarily captured by Advaith. They are just etched in my heart.

Charanraj's soulful music elevates too.

Kudos too the whole team for this amazingly well done movie.

Slow Nightmare
manojncbms3 September 2023
Extremely slow and torturous. A desperate attempt to split the story into two movies when there is no real content for 6 hours. The movie never took off. Very disappointed. The love story is plain and the reasoning for a lot of actions is very weak. The story only begins at the climax and everything is just a drag till then. A desperate attempt to make the viewers come back to the second part. The story is also depressive at many scenes. Many characters are used loosely. I don't recommend watching this in the theaters . A Classic example of over expectation and under delivery. I'm surprised to see 9+ rating on IMDB.

Beautifully crafted emotional ride
dradarshshetty5 September 2023
Hemanth Rao hats off to you. There are only few directors who give importance to silence saying all emotions. You have nailed it to perfection. What an amazing performance by Rukmini vasant and Rakshit Shetty. All other actors were good too. Emotions felt so real that it ll definitely make your eyes filled with some tears at some point.

Music is so soothing and complimenting the brilliant direction, performances. Please don't go by any negative reviews, just go and watch this wonderful movie. I can assure you that you ll not be disappointed if you are a true movie buff. Eagerly waiting for Side B.

Everyone should watch the interviews of hemanth Rao to know how passionate he is about movies. We need these kind of directors.

belmarahul2 September 2023
What a emotion filled movie. Screenplay, Music, Cinematoraphy all are awesome. Rakshith and Rukimini seriously were competing each others in healthy way. Rakshith is an asset to KFI and we have found a new asset to KFI - Rukmini Vasanth. Special mention to Ramesh Inder sir. Hemanth Rao, Man you deserve a standing ovation for your uniqueness and flavour of your direction in every movie and this is one of the best of your work. Rakshith is setting his standards very high in his every movie. Charan raj is a magician. Addictive BGMs. Advaith cinematography is top notch and serious competition for best cinematographer with Aravind Kshyap. Salute to the entire team for believing in Poetic movie in 2023 and making it happen. Can't wait for Side B.

Nice love story of Manu and Priya ...part 1 fully developing story ...it's real struggle of a comman lower middle class Manu and Priya. In second part will he become mass? Will he take revange ? Waiting to watch part B. Don't compare this movie to KGF/Pushpa/Kirik Party and all. It's a family and love story oriented movie.
