This episode puts its finger on a real problem for families: where one or both partners are in a service profession - medical staff, police, fire service, military personnel, lifeboats and many others. At least one partner may be called away from the home because someone else is in need, and they will always respond. The other partner and any children recognise that they have been given a lower priority than whoever's need has called their family member. This is not good for the support of long-term relationships and provides at least a partial explanation for the breakdown of marriages in these professions. Well done to the writers for highlighting this issue!
And a shout out to the wardrobe department! Throughout the series I have been amazed at the variety of design in Dr Wade's hats/hair retainers. The effort involved in the design and manufacture of such a range must be enormous! The creation appearing in this episode shines like a beacon and really brightens the story. (Would I be wrong in suspecting that CCH Pounder has considerable input to that process?)
