- Toby rescues a woman from a car wreck. Reading her mind, her child was abducted but she fears saying anything.
- This is the first episode of a new series on NBC. The main character is Toby Logan (Craig Oljenik) who is an EMS Technician that happens to have the power of telepathy. His partner, Oz (Ennis Emmer) is somewhat of a comic relief on the show. The main doctor, Olivia Fawcett (Mylene Robic) is also Toby's on again/off again romantic interest. Every show of this type has to have a main police detective, and Charlie Marks (Lisa Marcos) fits the bill here.
We open to a Toby voice-over "Ever wonder what people are thinking ? I dont. I know." As the voice-over continues he walks down the city street (Toronto) and as he passes people you hear their thoughts.
Toby walks into a diner. As he passes a homeless looking man sitting at a table, he hears the guy thinking "I need another dollar." Toby takes a dollar coin out of his pocket, stoops down as if picking it off the ground, and offers it to the guy, pretending like the guy must have dropped it. Our character is now established as a pretty nice guy.
He continues until he gets to the table his friend Oz is seated, and sits down. They talk about Olivia. Apparently they have a semi-stormy relationship.
Time to go. Oz and Toby are riding in Oz' car to the station to report for work. On the way Toby gets a vision of an overturned station wagon and a woman with a heart tattoo on her hand. It takes him aback, so Oz pulls over and asks him if he's okay, is it a migraine, etc. Toby says he doesn't get migraines.
They look from where they pulled over and they see the car that Toby just had a vision of. They race towards it to see if anybody needs medical assistance and find a woman inside the car. The car is now on fire but they pull her out. As they are getting away from the on-fire car Oz says hurry before it blows up. Toby says that only happens in the movies and of course the car immediately blows up. Toby notices the woman has a heart tattoo on her hand.
**Commercial Break**
We return to the woman on a gurney, still at the scene of the accident. The police ask her if she was alone in the car, she says yeah. Toby then gets a vision of a little boy crying mommy.
Back at the station we meet the stern paramedic boss, George Ryder (Arnold Pinnock). He's upset and telling Toby he's not getting overtime. Toby is confused. It turns out that Oz put in for overtime for the accident they just attended to. Toby gets on the boss' good side by reading his mind and telling him he's going to bring him a DVD of some wrestling match in the morning (Ryder is a wrestling fan).
Now we're at the hospital, where we finally get to meet the on/off girlfriend-doctor, Olivia. She tells Toby the woman's name is Anna Sokur (Kristen Hager). Olivia looks annoyed and the gist of their conversation is that we make better friends than lovers. Her beeper goes off and she leaves.
Cue in Detective Marks, who's at the hospital to take a statement from Anna. She wasn't able to talk to her because she was zonked out on meds. Marks decides to ask Toby some questions instead. Did she say anything ? Toby says no. As she turns to go Toby remarks that Anna was over in the passenger side of the car and so she may not be the driver.
Next, Toby visits his friend/mentor Professor Ray Mercer (Colm Feore). He tells Ray about the incident and Ray wants to know what's so different about it. Toby confides that he couldn't control it and that at the time he was purposely not listening, ie shutting out thoughts and visions of others. He couldn't stop or control it. Ray then points out that he saved the girl. Maybe her cry for help was so intense that it broke down the barriers between their minds. Toby says I have to help this woman find her child and Ray warns him to be careful.
Back at the hospital, Toby asks Olivia if he can talk to Anna. He sits by her bed and introduces himself. Her thoughts read "Should I tell him?" He asks her if she remembers anything before the incident. Her thoughts show Anna putting her little boy into the car to go to daycare. We hear shots and see a glimpse of a face. She says "Oh my gosh, you shot him!". Toby looks at her and says "Someone took your son from you, didn't they ?". She starts crying and he tells her she has to tell the police. She says she can't and orders him out. Toby complies but on his way out we see the shooter sitting in the waiting room. Toby didn't notice him and kept walking.
**Commercial Break**
Our shooter goes into the hospital ward but Anna has bolted already.
Olivia corners Toby "What did you say to her ?? Shes gone !" Toby says the cops blew him off so he wanted to talk to her. Olivia says she has a concussion, she could get hurt walking around the city. She gives him her address and says go find her before she walks in front of a truck.
Anna's at her apartment now and she finds a menacing note and a cell phone for the kidnapper/shooter to call her on. Toby knocks on the door and she heads for the fire escape. Toby picks the lock and goes in, looking at pictures of her and her son.
Next thing you know, Det. Marks shows up wondering how Toby got in to Anna's apartment. He said the door was open. She demands to see his keys. She finds some type of lock pick on his key ring and he says it's for his bike lock. She says "Actually, it's a bump key. The only thing that'll get you through a tumbler lock faster is a swift kick." Then accuses him of robbing the apartments of the people that he rescues. He counters by stating he uses the pick when people who are alone have emergency calls. It's faster than waiting for the police to get there. As he gets ready to leave he asks Marks who is taking care of Anna's son. What son, she says. He points out the pics of the kid and they have a short exchange about child services or something. Toby leaves Marks, and she proceeds going through the apartment for clues.
Meanwhile, Anna is still on the fire escape. She drops the phone to the street below and it shatters all over the place.
The shooter calls (presumably after Marks left) and leaves a threatening message for Anna. Then we see the shooter arriving home, where he is holding the boy. He calls Anna again and just to encourage Anna to comply, lets the kid leave one of those I love you Mommy messages.
**Commercial Break**
Toby, at his apartment, has a flashback. We see him as a young boy. In the background some type of trailer or mobile home explodes and a woman (Tobys mother) is telling him "Your name is Toby! Toby Logan! Say it !"
Professor Ray shows up. He's worried about Toby's mental state based on the previous conversations they've had. Toby says this is making him remember things from his childhood. His mother had the gift, he thinks. It drove her over the edge. Ray says "Are you afraid that's going to happen to you?" Toby says maybe. Ray says that they will get through this.
Back at the police station, Marks' boss is looking at someone's file. It's a police officer who has not checked in for two days. She tells him about Anna and her kid being missing. The daycare place hasn't seen them either.
Speaking of the daycare, we now see Toby there talking to the person in charge. He walks out and sees the same car he saw in a vision earlier. The trunk with something in it. He picks the lock and theres' a body there.
Now the police are there, and lots of them. Marks talks to Toby about the car, how he knew, etc. He says kids told him that the car has been here for two days. And why did he call Marks ? She's the only detective he knows. He then wonders why there are so many police around for just one body. She says the dead guy is a cop, so the whole force is going to be out for the guy who did it, including the dead guy's partner. That's when we see the partner is the shooter/kidnapper.
**Good Time For A Commercial Break**
The shooter/cop is named Henderson (Greg Bryk). He acts all indignant towards Toby. Toby gets a vision of the two cops arguing. The shooter is saying "I am NOT gonna turn myself in!" During their conversation Henderson gets offended and goes after Toby. The two are separated by others at the scene.
Toby then gets interviewed again by Marks at the station.
Anna buys a .38 revolver from a street dealer and follows Henderson to his house. She heads to the back door and sees her son Nicky (Dakota Goyo). She tells him to unlock the door, then surprise Henderson is suddenly behind her.
**Another Good Time For A Break**
Toby shows up at the house and encounters Henderson's neighbor. What are you doing here, etc. Toby uses his gift to ascertain that Henderson went to his cabin by the lake. Toby drives there and on the way he calls Marks.
Now Toby is at the cabin peering in the window where we see Henderson threatening Anna and Nicky. He then takes them out of the cabin and towards the woods. Toby hits him from behind, allowing Anna and Nicky the chance to run, which they do. Henderson finally catches up to them at a cliff. Toby then arrives on scene. Now we get to learn what happened.
Henderson was basically a good cop who made some undisclosed mistake. His buddy tried to get him to fix it but Henderson accidentally shot him, which led him down the slippery slope to ruin. Toby tells Henderson you're not a bad cop and tries to convince him to give it up before he really goes too far. Henderson says I gotta finish this and rushes to the cliff where he jumps off.
In the process, Nicky also fell and he is hanging on for dear life. Toby and Anna help him up and all is well.
We learn that Henderson didn't die from the cliff, only got injured.
Back at the police station, Marks wants to know how Toby knew about all this stuff. He says I have a gift. She then says "Nice to meet you, Toby" thereby signifying they are officially friends.
Enter Olivia. "So I heard you had a rough couple of days". He replies "Yeah, its been interesting." Her thoughts read "Youre not going to tell me about it, are you?" He then suggests they go get a drink and he will tell her all about it. She says she gets off in an hour.
As Toby walks out on the streets of Toronto again, we hear the voice-over "All my life I told myself to turn it off. Shut it down. Make it go away. Today I broke the rule. I stopped looking the other way and I saw the truth. This isn't a curse. Its a gift."
