Evelyn, a beautiful young American, moves to Paris to find inspiration and live out her naive fantasies about the City of Love. She meets Etienne, a street-hardened thief who steals her wallet so he can ask her out. Evelyn is quickly drawn to Etienne's practiced charm and the allure of the famed city, and, for the first time, Etienne finds genuine feelings of love and companionship. But his instinct soon kicks in, and his growing distance ends Evelyn's remaining fantasies. Although still in love, she says goodbye, and her departure leads Etienne to confront the central question in his life - whether to choose the powerlessness of love, or the security of his lone existence. And he will be forever shaped by its resolution.
