Paul Newman: The Craft of Acting (2007)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Very good nine-minute interview with Paul Newman can be found on the DVD or Blu-ray of THE VERDICT. Newman starts off talking about the character development before diving into his theory on acting. He talks about how important he always found rehearsals and that he never understood why it wasn't done more often or why some directors don't have the crew set everything up before the actors show up. Newman also talks about the challenges of the role he played in the film and how Sidney Lumet made the shoot very easy. The most interesting part comes towards the end when the legend starts to talk about what it means to be excellent and to shoot for excellence no matter what you're doing in life. Fans of Newman are certainly going to enjoy watching this featurette even though it doesn't run long enough. Getting to hear the legend share his thoughts on acting is something his fans will love and it's always fascinating hearing what an actor thinks of a certain role and especially one such as Newman and the brilliance he brought to the film in question.
