Don't watch the real thing before this one, unless you like to compare

A almost one on one clone of the original UK series with Miranda Hart. Mayim Bialik does an admirable job copycatting MIranda Hart, which at the same time is the weakness of the show, Mayim plays MIranda, MIranda IS Miranda, The original is simply pleasantly crazy and weird, genuinely, the show is written for her personality, Mayim has to re en-act it and that makes it a lot less funny and feels a bit forced, Still she comes close in lots of moments. I find pleasure in watching how far she will succeed "Mirandarizing" herself, she did an admirable job, and I hope it will grow on her in the next episodes.

Amusing and a bit crazy!
Wisewoman624 January 2021
Call Me Kat is supposed to be modeled on the British version titled "Miranda". And, Miranda it's not. Miranda Hart is quite well known and her quirky "wink to the audience" show was well received and well done. It made you feel as if you were in on the joke. There were many genuine laughs.

As much as I love Mayim Bialik, and I do, I feel like she broke the fourth wall far too often. Her clumsiness seemed contrived rather than natural. I mean, how many times can someone get a drink spilled on them? There is little to no chemistry between her and Cheyenne Jackson yet we are supposed to feel their unspoken mutual attraction. The fabulous Leslie Jordan is in it, but he seemed like the obligatory gay character. "Look at us, we're woke."

There were several moments of amusement and a chuckle or two, but I hope they'll tone some of it down and give us some genuine laughs. It could be really funny!

What's that god awful smell?
Ed-Shullivan6 January 2021
I will tell you what it is. It's another stinker of a show that they advertised in advance to ad nauseum and it turns out that Call Me Kat is a real bore of what they expect to pass for a Comedy series?. Add insult to injury they also pipe in that obnoxious canned laughter continuously which is supposed to be our clue to laugh along. Laugh along at what? Not funny. Not interesting. A pure stinkeroo.

During this the pilot episode Mayim Bialik has this permanent smile on her face which, if it was her intention to make us smile as well it just did not work. There are cheap lines and even cheaper canned laughter piped in after each sentence spewed.

I give it a 3 out of 10 IMDB rating. The smell keeps getting worse.

Worse than the source material, but I'm still watching.

Some thoughts for American fans of Miranda, the British sitcom on which Call Me Kat is based:

For us -- the few, the proud, the self-professedly quirky -- this reincarnation is liable to stir up old feelings. From the cold open direct address, Call Me Kat establishes itself as a descendant of the original: the joke shop is now a cat cafe and Stevie's been split into 2 characters to run it, but we've still got our oddball heroine and her dashing love interest (who we hope to find out is a little goofy too.)

Pluck this conceit straight from 2009, kick it across the pond, and it plays (forgive me) worse. Kooky is hard to pull off, and the tone of the pilot episode veers towards obnoxious then overcorrects into saccharine, rarely striking quite the right balance. Sometimes the tracked laughs seem misplaced, the turns to camera slightly off time, the jokes a little awkward coming from Kat's mouth rather than Miranda's. But there are also moments where it works, including my favorite from the pilot, a sweet callback from Max (new Gary) all the way to a bit taken from the original series.

Is Call Me Kat as fresh and sweet as Miranda? Well, no, but I'm quite in love with the original so that's a biasing factor. Will I keep watching to see how it stacks up? Yes, definitely. It's trite, and not master cinema, but I could use a little comfort and I wasn't so scared off that I won't be back in search of more fruit friends next week.

Is "Plus One" the Rating of the Pilot Episode?
man-965136 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I can only assume that the title Plus One" refers to the rating of the pilot episode.

This show must be set in a lumber mill there are so many wooden performances. At least Swoozie Kurtz can blame her over use of botox for her blank robotic look. Cheyenne Jackson on the other hand can only blame himself for his incredibly bland and lifeless performance. Jackson is performing, if you can call it that, as if his family is being held hostage. Terrible terrible terible.

One of the professional reviewers commented that there is a absolutely "no chemistry " between Jackson and series Star Mayim Balik. She must be the only person on the planet who does not know that Jackson is a professional gay man. Gay gay gay. Yes there are any number of talented gay actors who can convincingly play a straight role. Jackson is so NOT one of those.

The brght spot in the series is Leslie Jordan who infuses the only warmly and humanity into his series. His scenes are the only point where there is the least flicker of interest in this otherwise bland production.

The writing on this series is cheap and awkward and amateurish. The script forces Bialik to do not one but two separate spit takes in the first four minutes of the episode. This may have been funny in a 1930s Three Stooges short but it is just embarrassingly out of place in a modern sitcom.

My suggestion is to rid the series of the deadweight - Jackson, Kurtz and the crappy writers, and focus more on Bialik and Jordan.

Rip off of BBCs 2009 show Miranda
drewgoede17 January 2021
This episode's plot and dialogue is almost word for word the same as season 1 episode 1 of Miranda. The characters a basically the same with few minor tweaks. I enjoyed this show but was disappointed at how much was ripped off an unoriginal. That's why I gave it a low rating.

Do yourself a favor... watch Miranda
shrnstill13 January 2021
All this did for me was make me want to watch the far superior Miranda. I would advise others to do the same.

Yikes

I'm not really sure what to say. It's pitched as a comedy though I couldn't figure a single moment when I should even smile, much less laugh. I actually feel badly because Mayim was brilliant as Amy Farrah Fowler in TBBT and I hoped to be entertained.

I was not. The writing and acting felt forced. The storyline was cliche. Part of me wants to give another episode a try, but I'm not excited about staring at my TV waiting to laugh. Disappointing.

Yikes

Oh geeze, I wanted to like this so badly. Being a huge fan of Mayim Bialik's previous work, the premise for this show sounded interesting. And to her credit, her acting still holds up! But, the show on a whole is definitely cringy and has a lack of flow. A little too over the top.

This episode's name should be "Minus One"
Laqshayaroraofficial1 December 2021
Watching this episode was literally one of the worst minutes of my life, this episode was beyond torture, even if you hire a failure primary school kid, he won't be able to write a script this bad, literally nothing is funny in this episode still constantly laughter track is being played. I loved Mayim in Big Bang Theory but couldn't tolerate her in this show.
