ReviewFor a film that overtly identifies its characters by caste, ‘Dasara’ stops well short of engaging with anti-caste politics in any meaningful way.Dasara / ScreengrabThe rise of the anti-caste film in Tamil cinema, with its Dalit protagonist who hits back, has somewhat rubbed off on Telugu cinema in recent years. However, most of these attempts have lacked the ideological framework and conviction of the Tamil films. For instance, when Asuran (2019) was remade as Narappa (2021), the makers added a line that said a poor man has no caste or class. This was ironic to say the least, considering the Tamil film was based on the land rights of the Dalit people. Dasara, directed by debut filmmaker Srikanth Odela, has Nani playing a hero from an oppressed caste, but the film gives one the impression of being a mishmash of several blockbusters from different industries. The film is set in 1995, with its...

TollywoodApart from risky shots, body doubles are always used on the sets to prepare for the scenes in general.Rajeswari ParasaBy ArrangementT Prem Kumar has appeared in quite a few Telugu films but you probably won't recognise him if you saw him. The actor has worked as a body double for Megastar Chiranjeevi, with the back of his head, profile or face in a long shot, appearing in action sequences. But now, Prem Kumar is a teacher at a private school in his village Palakollu in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. "Being a body double is not a lucrative profession. The pay is very meagre and most of it used to be spent on just transport. I live away from the city, and whenever I used to get a call from the film team, which I used to eagerly wait for, I would go all the way to Hyderabad from Palakollu.

Film CommentaryThe film's toned down approach to caste realities, with the apparent intention of subverting the anti-caste spirit, is as hypocritical as calling the murders of inter-caste couples an "issue between families".Charan TejaImage: Amazon Prime Video/FacebookWhen an original work of art is easily available and accessible, few people would choose a flawed imitation. It is therefore common sense that anyone who is aware of social realities would choose Asuran over the Telugu remake, Narappa. The Vetri Maaran directorial starring Dhanush in Tamil was remade by Sreekanth Addala as Narappa in Telugu, with Daggubati Venkatesh in the titular role. Keeping aside the criticism that Asuran received with regard to its portrayal of violence against Dalits and the retaliation (since the contours of anti-caste cinema are still being debated), it can be said that Asuran was largely hailed for showcasing the spirit of anti-caste struggles, and the lives of Dalits...

ControversySiddharth's tweet came after fans of Telugu and Tamil cinema clashed on Twitter over 'Narappa' and 'Asuran' as well as Balayya's comments on Ar Rahman.Tnm StaffInstagram/ SiddharthActor Siddharth, who has predominantly worked in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu films took to Twitter on July 21 to react to the Twitter war between Kollywood and Tollywood fans. Sharing his thoughts about the controversy, Siddharth pointed out that streaming platform Netflix had recently launched an exclusive handle for south Indian releases. Commenting on the move, Siddharth noted that Netflix has clubbed all south Indian film industries under one handle as Netflix India South, instead of launching a separate handle for each film industry. He also said that it is important to give due recognition to each language and change the narrative that Hindi is considered to be better than south Indian languages. “For geniuses fighting #Tollywood Vs #Kollywood on twitter today,...

ReviewThe politics of the remake, directed by Srikanth Addala, is intentionally muddled by the references to rich and poor. Sowmya RajendranNarappa is the Telugu remake of Vetri Maaran's 2019 film Asuran, one of Dhanush's biggest hits and a film that led to a lot of debate and conversation around land rights, caste and oppression. While the film was hailed for presenting the ugly reality of caste, it was also criticised for glorifying violence on screen and elaborately showing the humiliation of already marginalised groups. The remake, directed by Srikanth Addala, comes two years later and one is left asking why it had to be made at all. It's not that Narappa is a bad film. Every frame is almost the same as Asuran, making us wonder why the same film had to be made again when the original was immensely popular across the southern states. More troublingly, the director has...
