Chinese news or propaganda
This is a Chinese news program calling attention to the terrorism in Xinjiang and justifying the country's re-education program. It obviously has its point of view and I don't agree with many of it. I'm not going to comment on that but I'm going to try to critique its filmmaking points. The best and most persuasive parts are the CCTV footage of the terrorist attacks. I hope they are not misrepresenting the footage but they are quite compelling. It's very violent and very convincing. The attacks are not well documented in the west which makes detailing the terrorism a must for a documentary directed at the west. It's no small thing that the events seems to be a jumble culminating to the Tiananmen. It should be much clearer to tell a more compelling story. In contrast, the least persuasive parts are the terrorist interviews. They all look like prison confessions and the one in the hospital is the least convincing. The trick is to marry footage of these terrorists pre-attack with everyday footage of them telling their stories in a relaxed way. It's a tough trick but these government interrogations do not work. Then there are talking heads. Some are emotionally effective. Others are nobodies. The Tiananmen attack section is possibly this doc's best argument. The guy is in his full terrorist garb with terrorist flags and terrorist craze. The most truthful words in the whole hour may be the terrorist operator who says that after Tiananmen, the government is panicking. The next section is showing how the terrorists are bastardizing Islam for its own purposes. The last section has the 9/11 attack and soft selling the re-education program. It tries to wrap it up but much of it is unconvincing. This news special would have a more effective punch if it concentrates on detailing the various terrorist attacks.
