Delsarte
While she is supposed to be watching over her small, butterfly-hunting sister, a young lady is distracted by her suitor. When little sister falls off a cliff into the water, she panics, but the suitor dives in to rescue her.
This is a typical Italia film from the period. Costuming and settings are sumptuous. The studio seems to have been a magnificent estate earlier.
However, I do find myself a bit put off at first by the acting. It is Delsarte acting, a style devised in the 19th century in which inner emotions were linked to and communicated by gestures. When used by good actors who understood the methods, it was a tremendously important advance in acting and if you get a chance to see Duse in CENERE, you will see it done right.
However, in the United States, what we most remember about Delsarte is the sort of pointless posing that was taught to young ladies in the 1920s and 1930s that enabled them to throw tantrums without shouting. I saw this sort of activity when I was young and that is my immediate reaction to the acting in this movie. At first it seems artificial and insincere.
However, after a bit, I grew used to the conventions and a second viewing showed them to be well versed in the technique. Although this movie is more an anecdote than a story, it is a well told one.
