I saw this film recently on PBS and was taken aback by its beautiful, haunting approach, definitely not your typical science documentary. One doesn't expect a natural history documentary to be a work of art, but this combination of vision, poetic script, lush cinematography and delicate, poignant music is just that. There's even a sly humor in images of the underwater estuary, dancing fiddler crabs and a kaleidoscopic, cool jazz sequence of microscopic diatoms. I nearly wept at a poignant reflection on mortality and a love of marsh grass, something I could not have imagined without the insights of this film. The filmmaker does not avoid addressing the very real dangers of climate change to the existence of the Outer Banks, but the overall tone is one of a sense of wonder, reveling in the beauty that is this singular place. I've never been but this film takes me there and now I, too, love those islands and mourn their imminent demise.
