A royal problem
TheLittleSongbird2 May 2022
Despite being very been there done that and being something that has been done quite a number of times in various shows, the premise did sound relatable. And this is coming from somebody who has a thing for great premises that are easy to relate to. Also do like Pinkie Pie as a character, 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' (even with its downs was one of the best animated shows in recent years) did see her being annoying at times but she could also be very funny.

She leaned towards being more the former sadly in 'My Little Pony: Pony Life's' first episode "Princess Probz". It is a very poor start and it is regrettable to say that the quality of the show, even when giving it a very fair chance by watching all the episodes to see whether it would get better and because of liking 'Friendship is Magic' and the Mane 6 so much, never really got off the ground even with some marginal improvement in Season 2. All the problems that doomed 'My Little Pony: Pony Life', which was every bit as weak as its advertising, are here.

The best, or more like least bad, aspect is the voice acting, all doing a valiant job with what they're given. Andrea Libman really does try hard in making Pinkie Pie likeable in some way with some nice nuances. It is a shame however that the material severely works against her.

Everything else is poor. There is nothing imaginative or vibrant about the animation, which is rushed and careless looking throughout. Indicative of rushed deadlines and low budget. The music is like cheesy high school quality and never fits with what goes on. The theme tune is grating. The writing is limp and unimaginative, complete with an over reliance on immature slapstick. As well as humour that really disrespects its target audience, making older viewers feel dumb. Not to mention that it is far too tame.

Particularly obvious in Applejack's fourth wall breaking, which is too often out of place and never funny. There is no soul or charm in the story and it is far too simple, there is actually not much of one and it drags. What little signs of a moral is neither relatable or subtle and is also lost amongst the too heavy emphasis on the modern take on modern technology. One of 'Pony Life's' biggest problems was its dumbing down and reinforcing of the ignorant target audience stereotype people have of My Little Pony, when 'Friendship is Magic' excelled so brilliantly at breaking away from it and providing plenty for people of all ages.

Furthermore, there is none of the complex character writing that was seen with 'Friendship is Magic' at its best. All the characters focused on are borderline stereotypical and overblown cliches, with their character flaws excessively done and their virtues barely there. Rarity's melodramatic behaviour particularly is taken to extremes, which shocked me seeing as she was always one of the more interesting and consistently characterised Mane 6 characters. Pinkie Pie's character writing is the equivalent of how she was written in "Yakkity Sax", so selfish and childish, and the way she is treated is similar to that episode, so mean-spirited and not sympathetic.

Very poor episode overall. 2/10.

Underwhelming

My expectations were low for this series, and this introductory episode utterly defied them in a disappointing way. The humor is so tame and barely impactful that it might as well not be there. At the same time, the plot is a mess because the very problem set up...just never gets resolved (which kind of destroys the stakes), and from one scene to another, some things are just forgotten. It's basically just an excuse for lots of emotional reactions for cheap visual gags that don't really land.

Hopefully this isn't the norm.

This... exists? Warning: Spoilers
Seeing the trailers for the first time, I was actually pretty hyped for this show back in 2020. As a fan of the original I had high hopes for this series. After watching the first episodes... I realized this show is no where near as good as I thought. The animation is sloppy, the plot is pretty basic and predictable, the voice acting is... well actually... it's good, and 0 comedy despite being a show about "the funny side of friendship". This statement goes for all of the episodes (yes I have seen them all, yes I regret it). This is a bad first episode because it doesn't do what a first episode should... introduce the characters and setting properly. It's like it's just expecting the viewers to automatically know what FIM is, it doesn't feel the need to even each character's names. I also find the conflict in Part 2 to be very contrived just so that the characters can learn a forced lesson. One, how does putting just (what looks like) baking soda in a blender cause so much flan batter to get over the kitchen and cover all of Pinkie's friends? Two, Twilight is an ALICORN. Yet, in this show all that takes to stop her and her friends is batter. Pathetic.

Great Premier!

Warning: Spoilers
I already left a review talking about the aspects related to the show overall, so I won't be talking about things like the animation or ignoring rules and stuff here. Check out my review of the whole show for that.

Anyways, Princess Probz was a very enjoyable premier, with great humour, a really energetic fast pace, a fun plot that allows for many great moments, and I'm happy to say Celestia's fun side fits perfectly into the style of Pony Life. I also think the comparisons to Yakity Sax are overblown. There the moral was that even if it makes everyone around you miserable, you should just do whatever you want. Here the moral is that you shouldn't make someone do something your way if they already know a way that works.
