Synopsis

  • At Lux, Lucifer talks with his brother Jophiel, and asks what his choice will be for God. Jophiel is distracted by the dancers, and Lucifer plies him with rare vodka. The archangel finally says that he's not sure about Lucifer being God, and figures there's a catch. Jophiel points out that Michael has practically in charge and keeps the train running,, and stays to party.

The next day, Lucifer and Chloe go to a crime scene at a house and Chloe wonders what God's consultant does and how it will affect her life. She assures him Lucifer that she still wants to do it, and Lucifer says that he's not sure he can convince his siblings to back him. A man has been shot and a nearby wine bottle broken. Dan suggests that Ella go on a date with his old partner, Carol Corbett, and is in town. He figures Ella and Carol would hit it off. Ella says that she's at peace with what happened, and Dan tells her she deserves someone at great as she is.

Lucifer and Chloe come in, and Ella tells them that the victim is Jonathan Donnelly, and he was a forensic tech tied down a couple of hours and forced to drink wine before he was shot. They got Donnelly's phone and a few days ago, he got a mean text from "Moe". Moe says Donnelly was going to pay, and Ella goes to check the phone number. Chloe looks around and then tells Lucifer that there's something she needs to do.

At the station, Chloe tells the officers that she put in her two weeks' notice and she's retiring. She talks about how she appreciates them. Ella and Dan are there, and he tells her that he didn't know about it but figures who it's about.

Afterward, Dan talks to Chloe. Ella barges in and is angry that Chloe is retiring. Chloe explains that she's helping Lucifer with his family business. As Lucifer comes in, Ella is angry that they're both leaving. Chloe says that it was her case, and Ella reports that psychic Odetta Watson sent the text. Ella storms off, still mad. The partners go to Odetta's shop and she "feels" Lucifer's great uncertainty. She makes vague guesses about Lucifer's situation, and tells him to lean into his strengths.

Odetta figures Chloe is the skeptic in the relationship, and Chloe asks the psychic about Donnelly. They explain that Donnelly is dead and Odetta is shocked. Chloe figures Donnelly worked with her to find things about dead relatives of Odetta's clients, and Odetta says that she wouldn't kill a valuable partner. Odetta has an alibi and says that Donnelly gave the items Odetta couldn't use and gave them to a fence, TJ, who sold them on the black market.

At Chloe's place, Dan and Trixie are playing the game 'Unstable Unicorns'. Amenadiel comes by and tells Dan that he's going to become a policeman. Dan doesn't think it's a good idea and Amenadiel picks up on it, and leaves in disgust.

At Lux, Lucifer meets with Saraqael and she tells him that she's not supporting him. Lucifer uses his soul gaze on her, but it doesn't work on her. He offers to grant her a favor and asks what she desires, and she gushes over Lucifer's chef, 'Top Chef' Michael Valtaggio. Lucifer says that he's arranged a VIP lifetime membership for Saraqael at Vataggio's club and his personal phone number. All she has to do is support Lucifer. Saraqael asks why he wants to be God so badly, and Lucifer doesn't have answer for her. Saraqael says that she has to think about it and leaves.

Later, Lucifer and Chloe go to see TJ at his home. Lucifer thinks their case is boring, and Chloe says that it's exciting. He wonders if she should quit, and Chloe assures him that she wants to. The door is open and the partners go in, and find a bootmark and signs of someone searching the place. TJ comes in from grocery shopping, and he kicks Lucifer back and runs, making a superhuman leap over the back fence.

Back at the lab, Ella confirms that the bootmark doesn't belong to TJ, but matches the one at Donnelly's murder. They wonder what the killer was looking for at TJ's place, and Ella plays up the mystery to try and convince Chloe not to retire. Chloe and Lucifer will focus on TJ's family and friends, while Dan goes over the list of stolen items on TJ's computer to help them with the grunt work. He then gives Ella's Carol's phone number, and Ella finally gives in. Lucifer tells Chloe that he has a theory about TJ and goes to check it out.

At Linda's house, Maze is trying out Queen of Hell costumes for Linda. Linda suggests that Maze is fixating on the costume because she's worried about her soul hindering her being queen. Maze says she's going to let her soul suffocate and die because it isn't for her. Linda asks if Maze wants to suffocate the good times she had with her friends, and Maze says that she has to do it because the alternative is worse.

Lucifer comes in and talks to Maze privately. He says that TJ might be a demon, and Maze says that she doesn't know but Lucifer could get Hell in check by becoming God. She points out that Zadkiel is Lucifer's last swing vote and Zadkiel hates Lucifer, and Lucifer explains that he's going to tell Zadkiel something he's never told anyone.

At the penthouse, Lucifer tells Zadkiel that he was wrong about rebelling, and he did it for the wrong reasons. He says that he's changed, getting over his daddy issues, and promises he will give the job his absolute best. Zadkiel says that Lucifer's job was impressive, but he's never going to support Lucifer and is just there for the whiskey and to watch Lucifer grovel. Angry, Lucifer says that it's not the entire truth, and tells Zadkiel that he's trying to become God out of love of a human and be worthy of her.

Zadkiel asks about the woman, and Lucifer angrily says that her name is Chloe and she is more than the "miracle child" that God made. Lucifer insists that because of Chloe, he has to make it happen with or without Zadkiel, and leaves.

Dan goes to Brooke Frier's house and he says that he's LAPD and they know she was TJ's client. He says that there's a killer looking for one of the stolen items, and might come after her. Vincent Le Mac is behind the door, threatening Brooke with a gun. She tells Dan that she hasn't seen anyone suspicious and has to go. Dan leaves, but picks up that something is wrong. He calls for backup, but a man comes up behind him with a gun and tells Dan to hang up his phone.

That night, the police are called to the house, and Ella confirms that Brooke was killed with two shots to the chest, same as Donnelly. The police are unable to ping Dan's phone because it's been turned off, and Ella blames herself for not coming with Dan. They figure the killers kept Dan alive, and they find signs of a fight. They find a grate and a dog tag inside, and back at the station, Ella confirms that they belong to a French Foreign Legion soldier. They belong to Sayeed Faisal, was dishonorably discharged and linked to a mercenary, Vincent. They never leave witnesses, and Chloe blames herself for Dan's assumed death. Lucifer and Ella assure Chloe that they're going to find Dan, and Maze arrives and says that she'll find Dan. Lucifer talks to Maze privately and tells her to call in all his favors with criminals to find Vincent... and Dan.

In an abandoned tunnel, Faisal beats Dan as Vincent looks on. Vincent asks Dan where TJ is, and Dan says that he has no idea who TJ is. Faisal goes back to beating Dan, and Dan still insists that he doesn't know TJ. Vincent then shows Dan a photo of a grave, and Vincent takes out his gun and aims it Dan, saying he's lying. Dan doesn't flinch, and Vincent puts his gun away and has Faisal continue beating Dan. Vincent gets a call about the police, and tells Faisal to shoot Dan dead.

Lucifer and Chloe meet with Amenadiel and tell him about the case. Maze figures that TJ isn't a demon, and they figure TJ isn't connected to Michael. Maze has a list of where the mercenaries could be, but it's substantial. They split up to search the locations.

Faisal tells Dan that killing him isn't personal, and Dan mumbles to get Faisal to approach him and then headbutts him, breaks free of the chair he's tied to, and managed to get his tied hands in front of himself. He and Faisal fight, and Dan manages to break his opponent's neck. As he staggers away, Vincent shoots Dan in the back, and then shoots Dan twice when Dan turns around.

Later, Maze and Chloe find the place and Chloe finds the dying Dan. Dan tells Chloe that he held on to tell her the name "Caleb', and to tell Trixie that he loves her. Dan dies in Chloe's arms. The EMTs arrive and take Dan to the hospital. Everyone else gathers there, and the surgeon tells them that Dan died. Trixie arrives and asks where Dan is, and Chloe hugs her daughter and tells her the news. Amenadiel asks Lucifer why it happened, and Amenadiel recognizes Caleb's name and figures he knows what it's all about.

Amenadiel and Lucifer fly to the grave of Caleb Mayfield, which is the photo that Vincent showed Dan. The coffin has been dug up and opened, and Amenadiel remains Lucifer that Caleb was the boy who died. Before Caleb was buried, Amenadiel laid his necklace on Caleb's body and someone came looking for it. Lucifer figures that Donnelly stole it, and Michael hired the mercenaries to find the necklace because TJ has it. The necklace gave TJ his super-strength, and it was activated when Azrael's Blade was brought to Earth by Gabriel. If Michael assembles the Flaming Sword, he'll win the war.

Lucifer and Chloe go to Chloe's house, and Chloe puts Trixie to bed. She says that she should have gone to the house, and Lucifer explains that it's Michael's plan and fault. Chloe asks Lucifer if he can win and fix it when he's God, and Lucifer says that he'll have to go to war with Michael and he hasn't done well in warring on Heaven in the past. He admits that he didn't get any votes, Lucifer tells Chloe that he told Zadkiel the truth about why he wants to be God, and Chloe asks Lucifer the same question. He says that if he's God, he'll finally be worthy of Chloe. Chloe tells Lucifer that if it's true, the archangels are right and Lucifer shouldn't be God.

Later, Dan is buried with honors. Carol approaches Ella and introduces himself, and says Dan was looking out for him. Ella figures Dan was looking out for everyone, and Ella goes over to talk to Amenadiel but first asks Carol to save her a seat. Amenadiel and Ella hug, and Ella knows what Amenadiel told Dan the last time they met. Ella assures Amenadiel that Dan turned in Amenadiel's application to the police academy on the day he died, and figures Dan is in a better place.

Amenadiel goes over to Lucifer and tells him that Dan isn't in Heaven and must be in Hell. Lucifer doesn't believe it, and insists that it's not fair. Going to the front, Amenadiel talks about how Dan helped him connect with people, and taught him how to be a good man because Dan was a good man. He tells Chloe and Trixie that they can take comfort that Dan is in a better place, and says that Dan will always be his best friend and will miss him. Crying, Amenadiel promises that he will always try to do better.

Maze arrives and tells Lucifer that she found Vincent. Ella goes up and sings, and as Lucifer sings with her, they bury Dan.

Later, Lucifer and Maze find Vincent and his mercenaries. They kill the men and confront Vincent. and Lucifer slaps his gun out of his hand. Eyes glowing red, Lucifer whispers in Vincent's ears, and Vincent falls to his knees sobbing. Maze and Lucifer turn and walk out.

Lucifer meets with Linda in her office and tells her they killed the people that killed Dan. Linda says that Lucifer's feelings matter, and it's important that he acknowledge he's grieving. Lucifer tells her that her job shouldn't exist, because he doesn't think pain should exist. Linda tells him that's life, but the suffering is optional. Lucifer angrily says that the system is broken, and Linda says that he can't control all the bad things that happen in the world. He tells her that there is something he could do, and he has to be God. The therapist asks what that means, and Lucifer tells her that they're going to war.
