- The Darlings deal with the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Dutch.
- This week opens with the infotainment program VIP Insider spotlighting the latest in Darling news: the Darlings have been sequestered at the Imperial mourning Ellen's unfortunate death in the fire at their country mansion, and Leticia's hearing on murder charges approaches. Before you know it, were seeing Nick facing the media again, introducing the attorney, exclusive lawyer to the super-rich Mr. Duramian, who will be defending Leticia against the charges that she murdered Dutch George.
Around the breakfast table, Patrick and Ellen's young uns share that their school friends and their parents think that Patrick was involved in Ellen's death, that everyone thinks it. He tells them, and the rest of the family, to turn off the TV and is hurt that they'd think such a thing possible.
Meanwhile Dutch tells Brian that he wants Nick to defend Leticia, and he and Brian seem to be discussing how to make that happen.
A quick cut to Nick and Lisa's apartment, where she tells him that he looks adorable on TV, and he makes clear that while he's forgiven her for kissing Jeremy, he's not forgotten. In an effort to reassure him of her loyalty, Lisa revives the discussion of them having another baby, and Nick says they'll discuss later. (Side note: when did Nick and Lisa get the same haircut? What is going on with bangs on this show?)
Jeremy, it seems, has not been sequestered at the Imperial with the rest of the Darlings -- he's been sequestered in the bedroom of Mysterious Lucy Liu's apartment for at least a few days. She tells him that she really does like him and did have a good time, and regardless of what happens later, he should remember that, and then heads off to work at a job that she won't reveal to Jeremy, who is appropriately puzzled.
Nick, Patrick and Karen discuss Ellen's memorial entertainment options, contemplating Elton John -- he'll play ''Candle in the Wind'' for anyone-- before setting on Ellen's favorite, Kenny G. (Karen: "That's so Ellen," as she gulps her bloody mary). Tripp and Brian enter the room and Tripp announces that with Leticia in legal straits, the board of directors requires that he appoint someone in her place as Vice Chair of Darling Enterprises. Not at all surprisingly, he tasks Nick with choosing amongst the siblings... yay, what fun for him!
Nick is off to Leticia's hearing and runs into Jeremy outside the courthouse, and then they both run into the opposing counsel for the hearing (and apparently Nick's former nemesis), Mysterious Lucy Liu! Who actually has a real name, Nola Lyons. She apologies to Jeremy for not revealing who she was, as Nick mentions that the last time he heard of her she was having an affair with her boss who she has now replaced. Warning: a battle royale ahead! Leticia's hearing features what looks to be a Tripp/Brian orchestrated blunder by her expensive attorney which forces Nick to step in and get bail for her instead of being remanded into custody, and a couple of Darling associates walk into the courtroom almost immediately with the millions of dollars for her bail, impressing the judge to no end. The judge accepts the bail, but reminds Leticia that she will be under strict house arrest, as her wealth makes her an extreme flight risk. As they exit the courtroom, Trip, Leticia, Nick and super lawyer are bombarded by the mass of humanity that is the press corps seemingly permanently assigned to following the Darlings, and super lawyer does little if anything to control the situation. In a matter of seconds, he is the former attorney of Leticia Darling. Looks like Tripp and Brian did have a plan, and boy, is it working.
Karen and Simon are at his loft, as he bestows a highly spendy necklace on her and urges her to fight for the Vice Chair position of Darling Enterprises, simultaneously playing off of her insecurities and overcoming her objections that Nick doesn't think of her as anything other than a silly rich girl. She heads to Nick's office to convince him, using an actual argument instead of her body this time, and is quite hurt at Nick's refusal to grant her the job that she really wants, and is qualified to have. (She has an MBA from Columbia?!) Simon later offers to speak to Nick for her, to argue her merits, and Karen agrees. Simon meet for less than a minute with Nick, telling him he's only asking him to consider Karen because he said he would, not because she's very qualified or anything, but just because he promised her. He asks Nick to tell Karen that he asked for her, nothing more.
Patrick's having a tough time writing Ellen's eulogy and yet in the same breath moans about missing Carmelita so much, and asks Nick's advice. Nick's suggestion: write the eulogy as if it was for Carmelita. Patrick also makes his bid to be the new Vice Chair, but Nick is silent about his choice.
Nick heads to Tripp's office, and hands him his selection of who should be the next Vice Chair, and Tripp accepts it...but they're not ready to tell us who it is, just yet.
When we finally make it to Ellen's funeral Leticia is there, defying the house arrest order. The actual Kenny G. is there as well, and begins to play as Nola Lyons shows up with police in tow to arrest Leticia for breaking house arrest. As she sends the police in to arrest Leticia, Nick asks Nola if she's really doing this. When she replies that yes, she is, Nick calls in the Darling press corps, who must have been hiding behind tombstones and mausoleums, who rush in to film the violent arrest of a grieving woman, and they get there just as Leticia faints. This upsets Brian, who tells the policeman harassing Leticia, ''Bring it, doughnut hole!'' and of course, a fight ensues, landing both Brian and Nick in jail.
Later, at the jail, Brian and Nick do their usual verbal sparring, this time with Brian accusing Nick of taking the Vice Chair position for himself, annoying Nick enough that he reveals that he had recommended Brian for the job the day before. In his own weird way of apologizing, Brian strongly urges Nick to take on Leticia's case, telling Nick that he knows Leticia didn't commit the murder, and strongly implying that Tripp is the actual murderer.
Before you know it, Nick is telling Tripp that he'll take the job as Leticia's lawyer, that it's what family does. Lisa is not too happy that he's done so, but wants to have the "let's have a baby" conversation again, something that Nick puts off yet again as he's got to head to the press conference. Lisa will see him there.
Jeremy goes to visit enemy attorney and/or his new love/lust interest Nola and despite the fact that she's trying to put his mother in prison for murder, he wants to continue their affair. Who's playing who here? And more importantly, is Jeremy capable of playing anyone?
Tripp has a discussion with Brian, readying him for the press conference downstairs where he'll be named the new Vice Chair. However, when they're at the press conference, Tripp surprises/upsets everyone and names Nick as his new Vice Chair. Nick seems completely shocked and accepts, much to the barely-contained displeasure of Lisa. Nick, who's already going to be hella busy as Leticia's lawyer, Vice Chair -- and the Darling's family attorney, -- thinks this is the perfect time to have that "let's have another baby" chit-chat that he's been avoiding, only this time, Lisa tells him to forget it, it's no longer a good idea.
Back in Simon Elders's loft, he and Karen occupy a brass bathtub as he reassures her that he talked with Nick for an hour about giving her the Vice Chair job, and he's so very sorry she didn't get it. He tells a glum Karen that Nick obviously made a mistake and doesn't find her as valuable as Simon knows she is. With the beaming grin Karen gives Simon, it's hard to say whether she's still playing Tripp's spy game, or if she has finally fallen completely under Simon Elders influence.
