Synopsis

  • Barrister (lawyer) Marion Wainwright [Emer Gillespie] is accosted and robbed while walking in an underground parking garage. Fortunately, Marion carries a Personal Emergency Alarm, which she sets off before she passes out. Within seconds, her assailants are slain. Shortly thereafter, the police are on the spot. The Code 5 team is called when surveillance tapes show no one assailing the assailants. Reviewing Marion's history is nonrevealing. Husband Anthony committed suicide two years ago, she has no children, and all other relatives check out. Reviewing her caseload from the past two years reveals only one big money case, involving VAT and imports, but that's the only case in which Code 5s might be interested.

The team goes to work. Mike and Rice interview the barrister currently handling the VAT case, but he knows little about it. He says that he took it over from the previous barrister, Dominic Keep, who recently died in a hit and run accident. Keep's ties to Marion prove to be a dead end. Following up on Marion's medical history, Angela discovers that Marion and her husband had been trying to have a baby for many years, but her 12 pregnancies all ended in miscarriage. In fact, her doctor suspects that their drive to bear a child might have been what drove Anthony Wainwright to commit suicide. Another dead end.

Fr Harman has better luck. While being questioned by him, Marion gets a nosebleed and passes out. Rice searches Marion's apartment and finds that she has been using a prescription nosespray, Synaret, which controls ovulation. Angela performs an ultrasound on Marion and finds her to be about 10 weeks pregnant, but the gestational sac looks empty. Could she be pregnant with a crossbreed...human and leech? If so, who is the father? Code 5s are sterile. Marion says that she was artificially inseminated with her husband's sperm, which he had had stored before his death.

Her story checks out. His sperm is in cold storage at the Moorcroft Fertility clinic. It is very poor quality, according to the clinic doctor. A sample of Wainwright's sperm shows up on the viewing screen, so it isn't Code 5 tissue. However, it explodes when placed in sunlight. Angela concludes that the sperm is human but the genetic information is Code 5 and that this may be an experiment to determine compatibility with a human ovum, possibly to find ways of producing offspring, just as humans do with in vitro fertilization. Perhaps they're looking for a way to produce Code 5's who can tolerate sunlight.

Angela suggests termination of the "phantom pregnancy," but Marion refuses and seeks counsel with her doctor at the Clinic. He concurs with termination on grounds that there is no embryo in the sac and it would be easier on Marion to end it now rather than wait for it to spontaneously abort. Fr Harman informs her that her husband's sperm was illegally tampered with, that she is in danger because the tamperers will be looking for her, and that termination is recommended. Needing yet another opinion, Marion goes to an independent clinic for advice. The clinic turns out to be Pro Life and prolific with crosses. Before Marion can get away, she passes out and begins to hemorrhage.

Meanwhile, Angela checks out Marion's midwife, Jacqueline Seabrook [Anni Domingo]. Looking through Seabrook's notes about Marion's pregnancy, Angela notices long lists of foods that contain vitamin D, but nothing about the best source of vitamin D...sunlight. Suspecting that Seabrook is a Code 5, Angela informs her that there is a virus going around at her Clinic and that she will be contacted shortly for a check-up. As Angela is about to leave, Seabrook gets a telephone call regarding Marion's condition. Angela takes the call and learns that Marion is being rushed to the hospital.

Angela heads for the hospital. On the way, she spies the ambulance that was carrying Marion. Marion is gone and the driver is dead, but a trail of blood leads into a courtyard. Angela follows the trail and finds Marion being cradled by her supposedly dead husband Anthony [Simon Donald]. Angela neutralizes him, but Marion dies from the hemorrhaging. In Marion's purse, Angela finds a note from Anthony: "When you read this, Marion, I'll be gone. I'm sorry. I'm just not as strong as you. Life's got the better of me. This will be hard for you to understand, I know, but where I'm going I'll be able to help you more than I can now. Believe me, I'm not going to be far away. I'll always be watching over you. One day, you're going to get what you want, I promise. And one day, the three of us will be together. So be patient. Keep strong. I'll be waiting. This isn't the end."

Meanwhile, Kirsty isn't about to end her search for information about Jack. When a visit to Mike's previous apartment reveals no leads to his current address, Kirsty turns to journalist Jacob Keanault [Thomas Lockyer], who agrees to look into Jack's disappearance and Mike's involvement with it.
