Quirky...and quite odd...but still worth a look
planktonrules19 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is a short film that can be seen on a DVD of award-winning shorts from around the world from the Film Movement Series. For several years now, Film Movement has been bringing out a yearly compilation of shorts in place of their usual monthly feature film release. This is from the January, 2008 collection.

This is a rather odd little film. The movie begins with a young lady running away from home--you assume because there is a lot of violence there. Shortly afterwords, she meets up with a singer who tells her she can be his backup singer. Oddly, she begins almost immediately following him about like a lost puppy and even starts cleaning his very dirty house--even though she just met him hours earlier. She also never questions any of his grand plans for their future--even when it becomes more and more apparent that he's a flake and a user.

The film is very quirky and strange, as the leading lady is about as dumb as a sack of door knobs AND she's hopelessly optimistic about this fat and balding loser being her "Prince Charming". While the film does have a sense of humor and made me laugh a bit, it's also very poignant and a sad case study of a lady with exceptionally low self-esteem who only sees the world the way she hopes it is.

In many ways, this film is like a much shorter version of Fellini's LA STRADA, though of course without the same level of style or depth. Interesting, of course, and worth a look. It's just too bad this was a short film--I really would have liked to see the characters and story hashed out more.

She was NOT running away from home!

I saw this at a west coast film festival that was part of a larger arts festival.

At the start of the film, she's seen climbing out of a window with the sounds of a fighting couple heard through the room's door. What I'm CERTAIN this depicts is the character "Vivian" escaping after being caught by the wife of the man she'd been seeing.

As become's evident to anyone with a heart and who's not a pompous ass, is that Vivian is a very lonely person who wants somebody to love her, like anybody would.

The next man she meets isn't anybodies idea of an ideal mate, but he's good enough. It's not like he's violent or anything.

I really liked this movie and I think that Liisa Repo-Martel is fantastic.

I've seen her in another film where she must have been in her teens or early twenties where she plays a girl from "the wrong side of the tracks" in a small town where people don't have much to do except for make you feel like you don't belong.

I think I'll go try and suss out what that film was. I would love to see it again.
