Eternal Engine...No...Eternal Engineer?...No!
aaronwjschuett16 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
...

The title of the episode is 'The Eternal Engineer' and last season we saw that the eternal engine is not eternal whatsoever. Consequently, I would allege that Mr. Wilford is not conducting the orchestra for too long himself. As for the episode, it was captivating, something the last two episodes were lacking. I understand that the plot needs to develop for the show's narrative, and overall the series is running at a steady speed. However, I feel that Melanie's (Jennifer Connelly) absence onscreen, has taken a valuable piece away from the show's allegory of status, gender and race. By the end of the first season, we see Melanie as a segue between Mr. Wilford's psychotic ideology and Layton's call for peace. Yet, Cavill is absent when the abundance of her pragmatism (though fully complicated) could exist to improve the storytelling. Ultimately, I am biased because I genuinely enjoy Connelly's character so possibly I have no merit. Seeing Layton in chains, after I thought the end credits were about the appear created so much anticipation for the finale. Is Miss Audrey and Alexandra going to team up together and help the train or has the singer defected mind, body and soul? Is icy Bob such a terrible guy? What is Josie going to do or risk with her newfound ability? And, where the hell is Melanie? Several what-ifs are keeping the speed, which provides the potential for the second season to end in a much more meaningful and impacting way than the first season. I have not felt this raw excitement for a finale in quite a while. Let us just hope that Melanie is there to catch her train.

Best Episode yet!
zodiak-0479718 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is by far the best episode of Season 2 yet, rivalling Season 1's explosive finale in tension, drama and awesomeness.

The divide caused on the train by Wilford's return is one of the best aspects of Season 2, reaching it's climax in this episode. The way the people of Snowpiercer are coming to see Wilford's way as the only way is brilliant at showing the man's power of manipulation. The tension this episode carried during the 'save the train' segments was surprisingly heavy, and hyped up the moments a lot, showing Wilford's sudden change to help save humanity's ark, and then realising near the end that it was all part of his plan. Hell, I knew it was all over when he picked up the PA system, that's how well conveyed the drama was in this episode. Bringing Boscovic back to Layton's side also warmed my heart, not to mention we got to see the big Serbian in action doing what he does best.

Another interesting thing about this episode was the focus on the train and how it works. Granted, I had no clue what Ben and Javi were on about half the time, but that just made it more interesting in a way. So much tension was built around a module malfunctioning and requiring Wilford himself to fix it with the only replacement. And I'm a Sci-Fi nerd as much as the next person, so hearing these guys talking about malfunctioning computer drives and mechanical motors on this futuristic train was awesome. Plus, the blend of the train's mechanical problems mixed with the Wilford divide was genius, really made me pondering what was going to happen next.

Layton. Layton was, as I understand, an un-liked character back in Season 1. Many people seemed unsatisfied with the casting choice and felt like he was a bit of a bland character with the 'train detective' arc of season 1. I also agree that there were some Layton moments that made me wonder, but I personally think the show was still rolling a little slow on the tracks (see what I did there?) and was attempting to flesh out many different characters. But this episode did something new to Layton's character, it showed him defeated. Granted this was done in season 1 when the threat of the Jackboots using gas on the rebels was revealed, though this was countered by Melanie's plan to disconnect the cars. But here, there is no solution, no plan, no resistance. Layton has lost the train, and with it, his purpose. He was always a leader, both in the Tail and with Snowpiercer as a whole. Now he's lost, and he doesn't know what to do. A defining character moment in my book.

And the ending was most unexpected. I had thought that Wilford would cause some sort of civil war and take the train by force. But he instead won the hearts of the people with a simple political move: presence. Him being on the train was bound to tip things over the edge, so once Jakes saw him you knew everything was about to change. But there was no bloodbath. Wilford won through his supporter's loyalty and the portrayal of him as the hero. And that was amazing. With the kind of grittiness this show has seen in the past you'd think there would be a big battle, and it completely subverts your expectations.

All in all, amazing episode, brilliant drama and I can't wait for the finale.

[6.8] Engineer ver.8

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 8: An interesting, more dramatic episode with nice campy flow, entertaining atmosphere divided between the Group, Taily and of course the great Mr. Wilford!, some generic good acting, some very instructive medical moments, some spicy nonsense as the very standard of the show, fillers for good measure and an ending twist which repercussions are unclear for now.

Warning: Spoilers
Bean dominates which is wonderful to see. I don't like Layton. A classic dogooder who needs to stay in his lane.

This show is finished
edblogr17 March 2021
Worst episode so far. So many plot holes, ridiculous, out of thin air twists and pointless decisions usually mean only one thing: additional "drama" has to be "engeniered" and installed, exactly as needed to fulfill a contractual obligation of 10 episodes. Logic and common sense? Who cares, they'll eat anything. Stupid consumers, right? Pathetic.
