Against the backdrop of violence and political unrest, the scattered Greeks of the Ottoman Empire realise that respect for fundamental human rights and democracy is far from being the case. As Miltos' father becomes a Member of Parliament, the Sultan's forces refuse to take it lying down, terrorising the defenceless villages of Pontus. During the wide-scale riots, cavalry captain Spatharis saves Nikolaidis from certain death, and Miltos, who is still in Paris, wants to take action.
