Ottoman Empire, 1897. As the brutal Turkish purge continues without mercy, fanatical Turks systematically kill the Greek-Christian population of Anatolia. As a result, the esteemed physician, Dr Michalis Nikolaidis, and his wife, Sofia, find themselves forced to flee their homeland; however, not before engaging their nine-year-old daughter, Iphigenia, to Miltos: the twelve-year-old son of merchant George Pavlidis, and his wife, Eugenia. Eleven long years later, the estranged young couple has a chance encounter in Constantinople, and, utterly unaware of the long-forgotten commitment, Miltos and Iphigenia fall passionately in love.
