I quite enjoyed the first season of the BBC's supernatural comedy when it aired last year. It was amiable, nice and family friendly, despite its relatively late night air time. This second season is better, funnier and with more pathos.
Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) continue to try and renovate Button hall to become a wedding venue. With all the ghosts on board now, this would seem to be more straightforward, but the work, and the preparations for their first nuptials have several of the ghosts considering their final days of life. In addition, ghost hunters, an unscheduled party and some burglars slow things down further.
Better all round, is what I'd say about this second run. Each of the ghosts are improved upon, with more back story provided, sometimes in the form of whole episodes about certain characters. These include Ben Willbond's Captain, who provides much of the pathos I mentioned, with an episode dedicated to his chaste and forbidden affection for an officer in his command. But also in the seasons standout episode "The Thomas Thorne Affair" in which Matthew Baynton's poet tells the story of his death, only to be corrected or confused by versions of the story provided by the other ghosts, who were present at the time.
I don't think it's such a massive improvement that if you hated it previously, it's going to suddenly win you over. It is still pretty inoffensive, chaste stuff (although there's one or two wittier ruder gags than I recall from before) but for my money, the performances are good, the characterisation is better, the story arc for the season is stronger and, as I say, it's funnier.
