Continuity

When the crew head to the forecastle Nav calls for both engines to be stopped. Shortly after Carl jumps in to the water, she does so for a second time.
When leaving the ship the crew member behind the kids salutes the ship, and then salutes a second time when the shot changes.
When Gavin (the dad who has kidnapped his own kids) is preparing to jump off the Hammersley into the ocean, he is wearing boots that are nearly knee-high; but when he is rescued from the water, he is wearing ankle-high shoes.

Character error

The father would have been told by legal advisers the mother cannot take the children overseas. The mother could leave, but only without the children.

In Australian federal law a parent cannot move away from the other parent with the children if the distance significantly affects visitation. While a specific distance is not given, overseas would certainly not be allowed. Leaving the country with the children without the permission of the other parent is a criminal act. Passports require both legal parents signatures on application, a step-parent is not a legal parent. Children's names can also be placed on the Family Law Watchlist and Federal Police will stop the children leaving the country if attempted.
