- Socially awkward, amiable , "gift shop-ist" Steven Grant learns that he may share a body with a ruthless mercenary.
- Steven Grant is plagued by nightmares and blackouts, and is stalked by Arthur Harrow and cultists, all of who want the golden scarab he's procured. Grant soon discovers that it's all real, and contained within him in the personality of a ruthless mercenary, Marc Spector.—Gislef
- Arthur Harrow, drinking, unfolds a piece of cloth on the table in front of him. He wraps his shot glass in the cloth, smashes it with his metal staff, pours the glass shards into his shoes, puts them on her bare feet, and calmly walks out.
Steven Grant wakes up in his flat, puzzled, and finds himself strapped to the bed. He frees himself and finds and on the floor, and finds his door taped shut. Steven feeds his one-finned goldfish and leaves a voice mail for his mother saying that he got her postcard, and goes to his job as a gift shop attendant at the British Museum. He manages to catch his bus and talks to a visiting girl about mummification. A co-worker, Donna, goes past with boxes and has Steven help her with them. She reminds him that he's not a tour guide, and reminds him that he's just supposed to sell snacks to the children.
Dylan comes over and chats with Steven, and asks if they're still on the next night for their date at a steakhouse. Steven doesn't remember and asks her if she's asking him out, and Dylan figures that he's joking and walks off. Donna comes over and jokingly congratulates Steven, and reminds him that he's a vegan. Steven and Donna go to the back to check inventory, and she tells him that he was late again. He says that the banners are showing seven Ennead members of Egyptian mythology, when there should be nine. Donna isn't impressed and tells him to get to work. At the end of his work day Steven leaves, and stops at a sidewalk vendor to get a bite to eat and talk to a street performer about his amnesia issues. Before he goes to bed, Steven spreads fresh sand on the floor to catch his footprints if he walks off, and tapes the door shut, and locks the door then restrains himself on the bed.
Steven tries to stay awake, working puzzles and reading books on Egyptian mythology. He finally dozes off, and wakes up the next morning in a field, his jaw dislocated. Steven realizes that he's in the Alps near a village, and hears a voice in his head telling him to go back to sleep and he's not supposed to be there. The voice tells Steven to surrender the body to Marc, and realizes that "the idiot" is in control. Steven finds a golden scarab brooch in his pocket, and turns to find a chalet behind him. A man is looking out the window, and Steven waves to him. The man waves back, and then that man and another shoot at Steven. The voice tells Steven to run, and Steven does so. The men chase him, and Steven runs into the village, avoids more men with guns, and tries to blend in with some of tourists.
The tourists all kneel to Harrow, who walks past them. They gather around him, and he talks about darkness and they're there to make Earth as much like Heaven as possible. A man steps up, and Harrow praises him as a brave man offering up his soul for judgment. Harrow takes the man's wrists, and Steven sees a tattoo of a scale on Harrow's arm. He places his staff on the man's wrist, and the tattoo of the scale turn green Harrow says the man is good and hugs him.
The men with guns arrive, and Steven tries to slip away. An old woman says that she has to know and goes up to Harrow, and he "judges" her. The scales turn red, and he tells her that Ammit has decided and wishes the woman could see the world they make. She collapses, dead, and one guard comes over and tells Harrow that someone ambushed them and killed two of their men, and they think Steven is still there.
Harrow yells in Egyptian, and everyone kneels except Steven. When Harrow sees Steven and calls him "mercenary", Steven has no idea what the older man is talking about. Harrow tells Steven to return the scarab, and Steven takes it out of his pocket. The voice tells Steven that he'll give Harrow nothing, and Steven'a body acts on its own and refuses to give Harrow the scarab. The cultists grab Steven and try to pry the scarab from his hands, and Steven blacks out. When he wakes up, he's covered in blood and surrounded by dead cultists. The voice in his head says that the idiot is back, and Steven runs off past Harrow and the other cultists. The cultists close in on him, and Steven takes a cup cake delivery truck and drives out of the village and down the highway.
The cultists drive after Steven, and he pulls past a farmer in his way as a cultist jumps onto the back of the delivery van. He comes in through the back, and Stevens slams cupcakes in his face. Steven blacks out and when he wakes up, he finds himself holding the boarder's gun and the board in the back, shot to death. The voice warns Steven about an oncoming truck, and Steven manages to avoid it. Two of the cultist cars pull up and the men inside prepare to shoot at Steven. He blacks out and wakes up, and finds himself driving evasively backwards. One cultist car pulls up against the hood, and Steven throws the gun at it. The cultist van pulls up in front of him, and the shooters get out and prepare to shoot Steven. The lumber from the truck Steven knocked off the road earlier hits and kills them, and...
Steven blacks out and wakes up in his bed in London. He's still restrained to the bed and the door tape is in place. Steven figures that he had a nightmare, but notices that the goldfish has two fins. He takes it to the pet shop and complains, and she says that Steven came in the previous day to get a fish. Steven sees the clock and realizes that it's afternoon, and his date for Dylan is in a couple of hours. He goes to the steakhouse and waits, and then calls Dylan. Dylan tells him that their date was two days ago on Friday, and Steven never showed. Steven doesn't know where the missing two days went. The waiter confirms that it's Sunday, and after having a meal, Steven calls his mother, leaves a voice mail praising Dylan, and walks home. Depressed he eats the chocolates he bought for Dylan.
Checking the floor, Steven finds scrapes from the table and spots a loose board in the wall above. He finds car keys and a flip phone, with missed calls from "Layla" on the latter. Layla calls and says she's texting and calling him for months, and he never got back to her. She comments on how he now has a British accent, and calls Steven "Marc". When Steven asks her why she called him Marc, she hangs up. Stevens' voice, speaking with an American accent, tells Steven to stop or he'll get himself in trouble. When Steven looks for the source of the voice, he sees his reflection in the darkened bathroom, shaking its head at him. The lights in the flat flicker, and the reflection in the mirror tells Steven to stop looking. The building shakes, and Steven runs to the lift.
The lift goes down, and opens on a darkened hallway. A bird-headed cloaked humanoid charges at Steven, but as the doors close an old woman enters the lift. Steven is crouched on the floor, and claims he lost his contact lens. The woman quickly get5s out when the lift stops on a lower floor, and when Steven turns, he sees the figure. He blacks out and wakes up on the bus, and sees the figure standing on the street. It disappears as the bus passes, and Steven quickly gets off the bus. Looking back, Steven sees Harrow on the bus and realizes the man is real.
Going into the museum, Steven tells the front desk guard to keep an eye out because he's being followed. Donna comes up and asks Steven to take the inventory downstairs, and Steven sees a man from the bus. He ignore Donna and follows the man into the Egyptian wing. Harrow approaches and admits he's surprised to see that Steven is real. The guard comes over and reveals the tattoo on his arm, and Harrow thanks him for helping.
More of the cultists step out, and Harrow tells Steven that the scarab belongs to Ammit. Harrow says that Ammit grew weary of waiting for evildoers to commit their crime, so punishes them based on what she can see of their destiny. Ammit knows what they will do, and punishes them accordingly. The cultists cut off Steven's attempts to escape, and Harrow says that Ammit was betrayed by indolent fellow gods, and even her own avatar.
The lights flicker, and Harrow tells Steven that the voice in his head must be maddening. He reveals his arm tattoo and takes Steven's wrist. He judges Steven, and says that there's chaos in him. More tourists come in, and Steven slips out past the open door.
That night, Steven is doing inventory alone in the museum. The lights go out and Steven walks to the exit. He hears a dog whining and goes to investigate, and a dog-like creature moves in the darkness behind him. Steven sees the shadow of the creature ahead, and hides behind a case. Harrow speaks through the intercom and tells Steven to give him the scarab and he'll be spared. Steven tosses his backpack out, and the creature leaps on it, and then runs after Steven. Steven runs and takes refuge in a restroom.
Marc appears in the mirrors, telling Steven that he can save them but he can't have Steven fighting them. Steven agree, and the creature breaks through the door and leaps on Steven . A hooded figure that has taken Steven's body beats the creature.
