Great Short

I saw this at Cinequest in San Jose awhile back and it has still stuck with me. It was a great film not only because it had a great story and the production values were so high. It was great because it made me think it was a certain kind of movie and it turned out to be something else. It had heart, and it really effected me. I remember holding my wife's hand at the end of the movie and just looking at her and squeezing her hand- it was either a line in the script or an action, but it was a beautiful moment and we both knew it. It was about friendship, culture, love, loss, God, and the struggle to be who you really are and not care what other people think. And... it was funny!

I'd like to offer my congrats to the filmmakers- a very moving film. I'd see a feature version of this film, keep up the good work. You could easily have the next Juno on your hands.

Has its moments, but not enough Warning: Spoilers
Do not be fooled by the title here. "Mamitas" is an English-language film and it is only called like that because this is how people with Hispanic origins living in the United States call their females, especially the young ones. This one was made by writer and director Nicholas Ozeki almost 10 years ago and it was successful enough that he would pick up the story again and turn it into a feature film. Sadly, I cannot agree with this decision unless the feature film turned out clearly superior. This short film has a couple okay moments as I already wrote in my title, but it is just not enough, even for a short film and I found it overall neither a convincing nor a memorable little movie. The acting was also mediocre at best. I give it a thumbs-down and I do not recommend the watch.
