Questionable... but that's the best part!

Warning: Spoilers
I have a strong suspicion that the people who developed this Anime conceived it very late one night or very early one morning whilst either fatally drunk or high as a kite on absinthe, and probably never met!

And may also have had a thing for young girls because there are quite a few scenes where they try to sex up an 11 year old...

What results is the most random, inconsistent, strange, curious, and downright insane show to hit the airwaves since Ren & Stimpy, and that's the best thing about it! This anime is absolutely hilarious in so many ways, largely due to the fact that it can't sit still for 5 seconds! Be it in the foreground or the background, something random or confusing is going on, and you really can't help but laugh at the madness that's going on.

So what's the grilling? An 11 year old girl genius named Rebecca has just become the youngest graduate ever from M.I.T in Boston, and takes up the role of teacher at the Pani Poni Academy in Japan, where she's treated to all manner of insanity by the students. These students include Rei, who's cold and sarcastic, Miyako, who's hard working and frequently annoyed by the randomness of her classmates, Kurumi, a manic depressant, Sayaka (a.k.a Number 6), who's quiet and kind hearted, Ichijō, the Class representative who frequently bends the laws of space and time to suit the situation (and sometimes attempts to murder the other class members), and Himeko, a massive airhead who has more energy than a nuclear reactor, and has a random compulsion to say the phrase 'Maho'! Rebecca is joined by Mesousa, a talking Rabbit who is also a manic depressant, unable to carry out even the simplest of task. With this colourful cast of characters, Rebecca must maintain schoolhouse order whilst at the same time being intervened every now and again by aliens sent to observe her (but more often than not spend their time buying pointless gadgets and items off mail-order).

With these credentials, you'd probably think this is totally stupid, and while it is very very random, it was a constant source of laughter for me as I moseyed my way through each episode. The pure madness on screen leaves you rubbing your head with confusion because it ranges from so many odd and confusing things. At one point they'll be in class, next they'll be fighting a Dark Lord from an alternate dimension, posing for erotic photos (yep, this is definitely an Anime), with the off chance that one of these days they may actually learn something at this school!

There are however some problems. The animation can be a bit clumsy at times, with some pieces being reused, or generally being of lower quality. It's definitely not the best anime ever made, in fact it's probably not one of the better anime's altogether. But of course, even the lowest quality anime's are a thousand times better than some of the best equivalent Western shows, because there's still so much to enjoy from the animation when it does shine through.

What you find yourself thinking after watching the episodes are what the motivations of the creators were. What was the mindset? I'm sure harmful substances were probably abused in its conception, indeed I would love to meet the sober man who came up with half the nuttiness chocked into every second! But once you've overcome the philosophical questions about what human being could possibly make such a delusional construct, you can't help but watch it again, because they're mad! They're all mad! So mad that even the characters from Alice in Wonderland would find it hard to comprehend!

Pani Poni Dash!

Warning: Spoilers
This surreal anime series is set in class 1-C of Peach Moon Academy where the teacher is eleven year old genius Rebecca Miyamoto. She may be a graduate of MIT but she is still very much a child and her students are very much aware of this and tend to treat her accordingly. The rest of the main cast includes students; Himeko, who shouts 'Maho' regularly for no apparent reason; Ichijo, the class rep, Miyako, the bookworm and a few others. There is also Mesousa, a depressed rabbit-like creature and a group or orbiting aliens who watch Becky. Over the course of the series they get up to a variety of strange adventures few of which one would expect school children, or anybody else for that matter, to get involved in.

Anybody looking for an ordinary school based anime will be in for a bit of a shock as this is fairly madcap with over-the-top characters and some very bizarre situations. This strangeness provides plenty of good laughs. The characters are fun, likable and fairly distinctive; especially the central cast. The animation is decent enough. I normally watch anime in Japanese with English subtitles but this time I watched the English dub and found it to be pretty good. Overall I'd say this is worth watching if you like your anime to be very surreal and fairly inoffensive.

I had great expectations

I love absurd comedy. I love Akiyuki Shinbo's shows.

But this doesn't work at all. I know that this show relies on the comedy of the absurd and that it is (mostly) episodic. I mean it has an overarching plot. So you can't judge seriously a comedy.

But is there any comedy? Sure you might find funny the characters' personalities and their interactions. It is good for 1, 2 even 3 episodes. But during all the show the jokes are the same. Take episode one and episode 26. Is there any difference?

No! I repeat each and every episode has the same jokes. When something repeats over and over it just gets lame and boring.

I had hopes for the show and on the mid point, there were 2 or 3 episodes that were better than others, but after that everything got even worse.

The best part of the show is the music. The OST is decent enough and it helped me finish the show. Endings were good too.

But the utmost value of the show are the openings. There are several and they all are amazing. I can't choose which one I prefer.

But was it worth to watch 26 episodes just for music?

I would recommend find OST in the internet and listen to it, but don't watch the show.

Randomness at its core
moldwarrior30 October 2010
Many anime have been very comedic and random but Pani Poni is just too weird. In one of the first scenes we actually meet God (a cat) who actually heats soda with his body....OK. The main thing that makes this anime really good is the characters. All of them are just stereotypes but thats not bad. There is a "plain" girl and a "hyper" girl which is pretty accurate. The animation is pretty good and pulls off the cute girl format very well. The weakest part of this anime is just the character Ichijo which she is supposed to be the weird girl but she comes off evil too. The openings and closings are relatively good. They are catchy and cute. Overall I enjoy this anime a lot.
