- Chloe: I'm glad you're with us.
- Jack Bauer: I'm not with anyone until someone starts answering some questions.
- [turns to Tony]
- Jack Bauer: Let's start with you. Why the hell aren't you dead?
- [about Jack returning to the United States after his stint in Sangala]
- David Emerson: Why'd you come back?
- Jack Bauer: Wanted to know what it was like to walk into a propeller.
- David Emerson: [unamused] That's funny.
- Chloe: I'm glad you're with us.
- Jack Bauer: I'm not with anybody until someone starts answering questions.
- [turns to Tony]
- Jack Bauer: Might as well start with you. Why are you not dead?
- Renee Walker: [Referring to finding Jack and Tony's escape route from FBI headquarters] no luck on municipal cameras: looks like they have someone running "interference" for them
- Larry Moss: Damn it, Bauer must've worked out his escape with Almeida's people?
- Renee Walker: I'm so sorry. That son of a bitch "played" me, believing the Bureau was "compromised?" Someone on the inside working against us? I realize now it was him all along
- Larry Moss: Don't put this on yourself: he "played" us both
- Renee Walker: No, I should've seen it
- Larry Moss: This is done, take it downstairs
- Renee Walker: Bauer's facing a federal indictment, years in prison. Almeida must've "offered" him a "way out?" I'm going to make this "right." Whatever it takes, I will find Bauer and Almeida
- Larry Moss: [Sarcastically] throw in that CIP device and you'll be "off the hook"
- Ethan Kanin: [Over the speakerphone as Taylor stands nearby] Agent Moss, this is Ethan Kanin, I'm here with the President: what are you and your folks doing about this "situation?"
- Larry Moss: We put out an all agency alert, everyone understands that finding Almeida is a top priority
- Ethan Kanin: [Sternly, referring to Tony] how did he escape?
- Larry Moss: He had the help of a former CTU agent we mistakenly trusted, a man by the name of Jack Bauer
- Ethan Kanin: Bauer? I thought he was in the middle of a Senate investigative hearing?
- Larry Moss: Yes sir, that is correct. We issued a subpoena a few hours ago, "excusing" him of the hearings to enlist his help in apprehending Almeida
- Ethan Kanin: Now you're saying these two men are aligned?
- Larry Moss: It would appear so
- Ethan Kanin: [Gradually raising his voice] my God, you and your people have "royally" screwed up Agent Moss: without Almeida, we have no way of finding Dubaku and no chance of recovering the CIP device
- President Allison Taylor: Ethan, let's stay "on point." Agent Moss, are you "working" any other "leads?"
- Larry Moss: Yes madam President, a "confederate" of Almeida's who was wounded earlier today. His just out of surgery, we're waiting for him to regain consciousness
- President Allison Taylor: Do we have a timeframe from the hospital on when that "might happen?"
- Larry Moss: No ma'am, not really
- President Allison Taylor: Let me be clear: recapturing Almeida and Bauer, isn't just your top priority, it's your only priority
- Larry Moss: Yes ma'am
- President Allison Taylor: [Before hanging up] keep us posted
- Ethan Kanin: Bottom line: the Bureau is not going to be the "answers to our prayers" here
- President Allison Taylor: I'm afraid not: how much time does that leave us?
- Ethan Kanin: [after looking at his watch] less than two hours, Dubaku's demand is that our forces pulls behind the twenty third meridian within twenty four hours. Now within to meet that timetable, the fleet and carrier air wing must start withdrawing by one o'clock at the latest
- President Allison Taylor: Which would effectively end our mission in Africa and condemn another hundred thousand Sangalians to a certain and brutal death
- Ethan Kanin: On the other "hand", if you authorize the invasion, Dubaku will undoubtedly "engage" the CIP device
- President Allison Taylor: How far has the FAA gotten with grounding aircrafts?
- Ethan Kanin: [Shakes his head] there's still a thousand aircrafts all over the country waiting for clearance to land: Dubaku could bring down any one of them at any moment. Or use the device for "something" far worse
- President Allison Taylor: I ran for Office on the principle of non-negotiation with terrorists. How can I abandon that right now? The very first time I'm tested? And if I do so, won't I be telling Dubaku and the rest of the world that blackmailing America works?
- Ethan Kanin: Madam President, those are questions for the future. We have a decision to make now
- Tony Almeida: I was "dead" Jack, for almost ten minutes: or so I was told
- Jack Bauer: [Sternly] by who?
- Chloe: [while showing him on a computer monitor] by him
- Tony Almeida: His name is David Emerson I don't know who he paid off at CTU but it was his people that injected my body with a hypodermic needle compound. It was able to revive me
- Jack Bauer: Who is he? And what does he want?
- Tony Almeida: He's an independent contractor: enlists ex-military and intelligence operatives, and "jobs" them out to clients. Apparently, I fit the "profile"
- Jack Bauer: [Angrily] what "profile?"
- Tony Almeida: Former employees with grievances against the federal government. Emerson has been "keeping" tabs" on me since I left CTU. After Michelle was killed, he figured I'd make a good recruit
- Jack Bauer: And everyone else thinking you're dead? So much the better
- Tony Almeida: 'Yeah
- Jack Bauer: [Walks closer to Tony] since then you've been working undercover to expose his operation?
- Tony Almeida: No Jack
- Jack Bauer: What?
- Tony Almeida: I was really working for him. I was angry, I hated the federal government for what it took from me. I ran Emerson's "crew" for more than three years and I did some pretty bad things
- Jack Bauer: What made you turn against them?
- Tony Almeida: The CIP device, Emerson had my "crew" stealing components to breach the firewall. I knew what that meant: innocent Americans would die and I didn't "sign up" for that
- Jack Bauer: [Raises his voice] damn it Tony, why didn't you call the authorities?
- Bill Buchanan: He couldn't Jack
- Jack Bauer: [Yells] why not?
- Bill Buchanan: He found out Emerson's client was Dubaku
- Jack Bauer: [to Tony] that's who you believe that has agents inside the government
- Bill Buchanan: [Responds for Tony] the Juma regime controls Sangala's vast diamond wealth. Dubaku hasn't been "shy" about "throwing" it around
- Jack Bauer: How widespread is the corruption?
- Bill Buchanan: Pervasive: that's why Tony came to me. We don't know how far or high up this "thing" went
- Tony Almeida: Dubaku's the key to this "thing" Jack. If we're going to "uncover" the "conspiracy", we have to get to him before he leaves the US. That's why I have to get back "under" as soon as possible, there's a new job in the pipeline for me and my "crew." I don't have all the details but I do know it'll get me in the same room as Dubaku himself
- Bill Buchanan: The "challenge" is going to be "re-installing" Tony with Emerson: we have to assume Emerson knew Tony was in FBI custody and somehow managed to escape
- Jack Bauer: Emerson's going to think Tony made a deal with the US Attorney
- Bill Buchanan: That's right
- Jack Bauer: I can help you with this
- Bill Buchanan: [Nods] yes you can
- Jack Bauer: Outside the three of you, who else is involved in this operation?
- Chloe: It's just us: this is it
- Jack Bauer: [to Bill] please tell me you have some "proof" of this "conspiracy" exists?
- Bill Buchanan: Yes we do but only at its lowest level. At this point, we've just begun to "scratch the surface"
- Jack Bauer: [after thinking it over] ok I'll work with you but only because right now you are the only people that I trust. You give me one reason to question that and I swear I will turn you in you understand?
- David Emerson: [Over the phone] yeah?
- Tony Almeida: [while Chloe monitors the call] it's me
- David Emerson: [Surprised to hear from him] where are you?
- Tony Almeida: I'm at a parking garage getting a car. I got away from the FBI
- David Emerson: Yeah I heard, I also heard it was Jack Bauer who got you out?
- Tony Almeida: That's right
- David Emerson: That doesn't make any sense. Bauer's working for "them", he helped capture you
- Tony Almeida: That's only because he didn't have a choice: his "on board" now
- David Emerson: What'd you mean "on board"?
- Tony Almeida: You heard about the Senate hearings this morning? They're going to file criminal charges against him. I told Bauer that if he helped us out with the mission, we can get him out of the country. Look, if it weren't for Jack, I'd still be in custody, we can use him, I'm telling you
- David Emerson: I don't know, Morgan's hiring new men now
- Tony Almeida: [Irritated] Morgan's a thug: he can't run point on something this important. Let me do it like we "planned." Bauer can take Tanner's place, and we're good to go
- David Emerson: [after thinking it over] alright, bring Bauer. We're at 22-11 Chesterfield
- Tony Almeida: [Before hanging up] got it
- Brian Gedge: Mr. Taylor, I understand you were looking for me?
- Henry Taylor: Yes, Agent Gedge, hi, I have to go out and I'm going to need some transportation
- Brian Gedge: Certainly, where are we going?
- Henry Taylor: I'll direct you on the way
- Brian Gedge: I'll need a destination for the manifest sir
- Henry Taylor: As before, I'd like you to keep this off the manifest and no driver this time: just you and me
- Brian Gedge: I thought we were through with all the subterfuge Mr. Taylor?
- Henry Taylor: Please just do as I ask
- Brian Gedge: I'm sorry sir, not without an explanation
- Henry Taylor: It's Samantha Roth: she says she has new information regarding my son's death
- Brian Gedge: Mr. Taylor...
- Henry Taylor: [Interrupts him] I thought I was done with this too, believe me. I didn't "initiate" this, she called me
- Henry Taylor: [while Brian remains silent] I know you felt obligated to report my prior "activities" and rightly so but I would like to think I can still count on your loyalty when I ask for it
- Brian Gedge: [after thinking it over] it's my job sir
- Henry Taylor: This will be the last time, I promise. Please?
- Brian Gedge: I'll call you as soon as I secure a vehicle
- Christina Hillinger: [Over the phone] it's me
- Sean Hillinger: Where are you?
- Christina Hillinger: I'm calling from the plane
- Sean Hillinger: You haven't landed yet?
- Christina Hillinger: The pilot says we're in a "holding pattern" but we keep circling and circling. I can see other planes out the window too: eight or nine at least
- Sean Hillinger: Sweetheart, relax
- Christina Hillinger: But the woman sitting next to me said she heard "something" about a "near miss" and a problem with the air traffic control system. Do you know anything about this?
- Sean Hillinger: Yeah, it's true. The FAA has grounded "some" planes but it's only a "precaution"
- Christina Hillinger: Really?
- Sean Hillinger: Yeah, it's an "isolated" incident. You're going to be fine
- Christina Hillinger: Ok, I just... I got worried there for a minute, you know how I am
- Sean Hillinger: I do. Now listen, I want you to call me as soon as you land
- Christina Hillinger: I will
- Sean Hillinger: I love you
- Christina Hillinger: I love you too
- Jack Bauer: Tell me about Emerson?
- Tony Almeida: His British: former SAS, urban warfare, snipping, closed quarter combat, saw action in Beirut, Mogadishu
- Jack Bauer: So he's good?
- Tony Almeida: Extremely. His not some "whack job" or "ideolog." His about two things: money and "personal loyalty"
- Jack Bauer: It sounds like you admire him?
- Tony Almeida: He treated me like a brother when I thought I had nobody else
- Jack Bauer: Is this going to be a problem?
- Tony Almeida: No, I know his on the wrong side of "this", I'll do what has to be done
- Tony Almeida: [Talking privately] what's going on?
- David Emerson: Bringing Bauer in is not worth the risk
- Tony Almeida: What're you talking about? I would still be in FBI custody if it wasn't for him
- David Emerson: Alright, you already made your case
- Tony Almeida: [Insistently] we can use him
- David Emerson: I "considered" it but I'm going a different "way"
- Tony Almeida: I owe him. Do you understand that?
- David Emerson: Yeah I appreciate your loyalty, I always have: this is business. I can't have an unknown "factor" like Jack Bauer coming in and messing things up
- Tony Almeida: [while Emerson loads and cocks a gun] what're you going to do? Kill him?
- David Emerson: No, you are
- President Allison Taylor: [after hearing a recording of Dubaku's demands in the Oval Office] I wanted you to hear it for yourself Prime Minister: so you could understand my dilemma
- Ule Matobo: [Nods] I see. You are recalling the invasion force?
- President Allison Taylor: That determination has yet to be made
- Ule Matobo: And this device at which Dubaku has control, it poses a "significant" risk to your people?
- President Allison Taylor: Yes, it's a technology that has the "potential" for mass civilian casualties and it puts the infrastructure of my country in great jeopardy
- Ule Matobo: What about Sangala?
- President Allison Taylor: Believe me, no one is more aware of what's at stake than I am
- Ule Matobo: So you've been informed of the situation in Casanga Province?
- Ethan Kanin: [after Taylor looks at Kanin] Juma's troops are advancing towards a refugee camp: over two thousand lives are threatened
- Ule Matobo: Mostly women and children. There is also the matter of those soldiers who are under the "promise" of American support, deserted the regime and joined my freedom fighters on the ground. This "promise" provides us with the weapons in order to defend ourselves
- President Allison Taylor: [Leans forward] you've been "patient" with us before Mr. Matobo, we can only ask that you be "patient" again. Now please, if you'll excuse me
- Ule Matobo: [as they stand up and shake hands] madam President, I implore you, do not to abandon my country
- President Allison Taylor: Mr. Matobo, I will do everything I can
- Ule Matobo: I'm counting on you, thank you
- President Allison Taylor: [Angrily to Kanin after the meeting with Matobo] you didn't think that I would want to know about the refugees in Casanga?
- Ethan Kanin: Madam President, you have enough to think about without being "burdened" with all the "details"
- President Allison Taylor: Especially "details" that might "push" me towards the invasion
- Ethan Kanin: Ma'am, you have to start focusing on "alternatives" to the invasion
- President Allison Taylor: [Raises her voice] give me a good "alternative" and I'll consider it
- Ethan Kanin: I'm not saying it's a good "alternative", but it's the "only" one: comply with Dubaku's demands, stand down the task force
- President Allison Taylor: That's your recommendation? Back down?
- Ethan Kanin: It is
- President Allison Taylor: Damn it, you heard Matobo, he has fighters on the ground counting on us. Do you want me to be responsible for another Bay of Pigs?
- Ethan Kanin: Kennedy "survived" the Bay of Pigs and you'll "survive" this: a superpower has to act first and foremost, in its own best interest
- President Allison Taylor: Always?
- Ethan Kanin: [Adamantly] always, no apologies
- President Allison Taylor: What about "allowing" a third party to dictate its foreign policy? Does a superpower do that?
- Ethan Kanin: Yes, if there's no other option and right now, there's not
- President Allison Taylor: What have we heard from the FBI on the search for Almeida and Bauer?
- Ethan Kanin: Nothing ma'am
- President Allison Taylor: Check with them anyway
- David Emerson: [Extends his hand for Jack to shake it] no hard feelings
- Jack Bauer: [Shakes his hand] forget it
- David Emerson: We have to be careful in our profession, I'm sure you understand
- Jack Bauer: Yeah
- David Emerson: We all know the drill: disagreements are fine but when a decision is made, fall in or you're gone
- Jack Bauer: I know a lot of guys who say that, it's good to know you mean it
- David Emerson: Before you were subpoenaed, you traveled the world, place to place for more than a year. Why? What were you looking for?
- Jack Bauer: Doesn't really matter: whatever it was, I didn't find it
- David Emerson: You must've known what was waiting, why'd you come back?
- Jack Bauer: [Jokingly] I wanted to know what it was like to walk into a propeller
- David Emerson: It's funny but no, really... why?
- Jack Bauer: This my home
- David Emerson: That doesn't explain why you turned yourself in to the Justice Department
- Jack Bauer: Tony, said you were in Beirut and Mogadishu?
- David Emerson: And Afghanistan: two tours, went back a third time as a private contractor
- Jack Bauer: "Be polite, professional, and have a plan to kill everyone you meet" right?
- David Emerson: Pretty much
- Jack Bauer: That's the question, isn't it? What are the rules of engagement? And where the crimes begin? You want to know why I came back? That's why
- David Emerson: I'm not sure I follow
- Jack Bauer: I just got tired of talking to myself. You see, I actually believed everything I did was "right." That's why I wanted to start a "dialog", come clean, set the record straight
- David Emerson: First mistake?
- Jack Bauer: So I found out
- David Emerson: I don't know of someone who hasn't been to "the edge", and looked over, I could never understand
- Jack Bauer: Yeah
- David Emerson: It's good to have you on board
- Samantha Roth: [Talking privately] I can't stay long
- Henry Taylor: What you told me on the phone: is it true?
- Samantha Roth: Yes, they killed Roger and made it look like a suicide
- Henry Taylor: Who? Who did this?
- Samantha Roth: The same people who provided false documents to the SEC to show he'd been trading on inside information
- Henry Taylor: Who are "they"?
- Samantha Roth: [Nervously] I don't know who "they" are, they just said they'd kill me if I said anything
- Henry Taylor: [Comforting her] easy, take it easy
- Samantha Roth: I loved him
- Henry Taylor: I know you did but right now I really need to know what happened
- Samantha Roth: Roger was "tasked" auditing the brokers in his department: that's how it started
- Henry Taylor: When was this?
- Samantha Roth: Early January. The compliance officer at his firm asked him to "flag" any undisclosed ownerships in the security positions
- Henry Taylor: I don't understand
- Samantha Roth: Basically: kickbacks but what he found was "something" else: two of his portfolio managers had taken on a new client. The Bahamas branch of Switzerland's oldest bank. Bank Lines International
- Henry Taylor: What was wrong with that?
- Samantha Roth: Bank Lines' record revealed that it was actively trading with firms doing business in Sangala
- Henry Taylor: [Surprised] Sangala?
- Samantha Roth: It jumped out at Roger too for obvious reasons and digging deeper, he uncovered other "blind" accounts that would copy the bank's trades
- Henry Taylor: Which accounts?
- Samantha Roth: Accounts that were traced with senior members of your wife's Administration
- Henry Taylor: [Sternly] who?
- Samantha Roth: I don't know but whoever it was had invested interest in the proposed military action
- Henry Taylor: Someone was betting against her? Who didn't think she'd pull it off politically?
- Samantha Roth: Betting "heavily" in ten thousand share blocks. Roger was a day or two from presenting her with the evidence
- Samantha Roth: [Hands him a flash drive] it's all here: account numbers, trading records, and everything that he knew. I'm sorry I can't help you out anymore
- Samantha Roth: [Trying to walk away until he grabs her arm] I've given all that I can. Do what you have to do but leave me out of it, please?
- Henry Taylor: Ok, thank you
- Renee Walker: [Talking privately outside Tanner's hospital room, referring to Tanner] his legal team is here, I need you to stall them
- Janis Gold: Me? How am I supposed to do that?
- Renee Walker: I don't care: make something up. Just keep them out of this room as long as you can
- Janis Gold: I'm not comfortable with this
- Renee Walker: Comfortable with what?
- Janis Gold: We are breaking about fifty federal guidelines just being here
- Renee Walker: Listen to me, this man is our only lead
- Janis Gold: That man asked for his legal counsel, I heard him
- Renee Walker: Thousands of lives are at stake here: we have to "bend" the rules a little bit right now or we're going to lose this chance forever
- Janis Gold: I'm sorry, I can't
- Renee Walker: I lost Tony Almeida on my watch, I have to make this "right." Now either help me or don't
- Janis Gold: [after thinking it over] ok
