- The ship crosses the Strait of Magellan and reaches the Pacific, but a new, unexpected danger lurks ahead.
- The Esperanza is drawing closer to the Strait of Magellan and prepares to get through. Mendoza, calm and confident, gives orders to his two henchmen Sancho and Pedro, each as cowardly as the other but determined to hide the fact. The crew is equally terrified. After four days and nights at the wheel, Mendoza brings the ship through the Strait without mishap. They sail on towards Lima. Life continues on board but gradually food and water supplies are running low. Zia falls ill after drinking some of the crew's water. Esteban decides to go and get some water from the barrel reserved for Gaspard, Gomez and Perez. In the hold the boy is attacked by rats. His cries attract the attention of Gaspard who accuses Esteban and Zia of stealing. The children are locked up in a cage and left. Now that they are safely through the Strait, Commander Perez thinks Mendoza is no longer so useful to them. He begins to scoff at him triumphantly when suddenly a flying fish crashes against his face. "I think you still need me, that is a sure sign of a storm coming" Mendoza tells him. The wind suddenly picks up and a tornado is seen bearing down on them. Perez begs Mendoza to take the wheel again. The crew stand to their posts but at that moment the ship cracks open on every side, the sail is rent and the mast snaps. What will become of Esteban and Zia?—Anonymous
