- A dying Glencora's last wishes are that Mary become financially independent and her children be allowed to marry whom they wish.
- Glencora's cold turns to pneumonia, and after a brief rally, it becomes apparent that she will die. She doesn't want her children to be trapped into an arranged marriage as she was. She begs Plantagenet to provide for Mary and to let her have control of her own money, and confides to Marie that she wishes Mary to marry the poor and politically incorrect Tregear and not have Silverbridge forced to marry Lady Mabel Grex. Although initially he opposes both marriages, Plantagenet eventually comes around when Marie tells him about Glencora's wishes. When Orlando Drought tries to force Silver into making a speech against the Liberal Party to embarrass his father, things brighten for Planty when Silver decides to leave the Tories, and Duke of St. Bungay finds a place for him to return to government service.—duke1029@aol.com
- Glencora's health takes a serious turn for the worse and doesn't have the opportunity to tell Plantagenet to give the children the freedom to choose their life partners on their own and that Mary be allowed to have control of her own capital, something she was never allowed to do. Plantgenet however won't hear of a relationship with the penniless Tregear and Mary tells him that while she will never marry against his wishes, she will never marry anyone else. After Silverbridge's foolish bet at the races, Plantagenet asks him only one thing, that he marry Mabel Grex. Silverbridge is now smitten with Isabel Boncassen however and his father makes it clear to him that he will never approve of the match. On top of it all, Gerald has been sent down from Cambridge and the Duke arranges, without consulting him, a new place at Oxford. It's left to Marie Finn to ensure that Plantagenet is aware of Glencora's last wishes for their children.—garykmcd
