(at around 1h 50 mins) Near the end of the film, Electro (Jamie Foxx) laments to Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man his disappointment that Spider-Man isn't black. This may be an Easter egg setting up the possibility that the current Spider-Man in the comics, Miles Morales, who is black, will appear in future MCU/Sony live-action movies. MCU producers have hinted at introducing him into the franchise as either a teammate of Tom Holland's Spider-Man or as his replacement should Holland not return to the role. In fact, Miles' existence in the MCU was directly confirmed in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), when Miles' uncle, Aaron Davis (played by Donald Glover), says that he has a nephew in town; there's even a deleted scene of Aaron talking to Miles on the phone. Currently, the only on-screen appearance of Miles is in the non-MCU canon film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).
Benedict Cumberbatch admitted to not reading the full script, wanting to surprise himself with the final product.
J.K. Simmons had enjoyed playing J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy, and admitted to being heartbroken that he wouldn't be able to revisit the character in a fourth movie. Naturally, when Marvel approached him to reprise his role in Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)'s stinger and this film, he jumped at the chance. Simmons also expressed excitement in adapting Jameson to the modern-day era, describing him more as a media blowhard than a newspaper editor. To make up for the fact that his character was now bald, Simmons insisted on keeping Jameson's cigar and mustache for this film, due to wanting to have some aspects from his portrayal in Sam Raimi's trilogy to carry over in the MCU.
Jamie Foxx and Willem Dafoe were very excited to play their respective villains again. Foxx in particular was pleased that he wasn't going to be blue this time. Alfred Molina, meanwhile, joked that he was only in it for the paycheck before confirming that he liked the story a lot before signing on.
For his appearance in the film, Alfred Molina was digitally de-aged to make him appear as he had in Spider-Man 2 (2004) and his mechanical tentacles were created through CGI, rather than through puppetry like in his first film.
To preserve the secrecy of film's production and to prevent his appearance from being leaked, Willem Dafoe walked around the set with a cloak covering his costume. Tom Holland accidentally bumped into Dafoe while cloaked and this was how the two first met on-set.
