They changed the format!! Ugh!
dsfzqhzhx25 August 2023
I was enjoying the show when they had three families competing against each other. Why did they change the format to only two families? It doesn't work with only two! It's terrible! There needs to be more families! Even four competing would be good, but not just two! I don't like it! And I liked when the mystery guest was on the cell phone, not in person, I thought that was cool. Also, showing just two mom's sitting there on the couch, instead of the whole audience, whose idea was that? They sit there alone smiling? No good! The new format doesn't cut it. Sometimes change is not good! If it doesn't go back to the way it was, I'm not going to watch anymore.

Good idea but poorly executed.
sharonsfun5 August 2022
Good idea but, it seems like the writers aren't doing their research. 10 year olds trying to identify members of pop groups that broke up in 2016, they were 4. Lots of questions not geared towards the kids ages. Stupid. They don't seem to gear the questions towards the ages of the contestants appearing on the show at the time. The contestants of each generation should be very close to the same ages. Especially the kids. The age difference and general knowledge between a 13 and 15 year old is a lot when you're a kid. The best part is the end when the winning team has a toddler from the family pick the prize to keep. A new car, and a REALLY cool Toy. That choice Wont be available for a second season!

Lou Wilson the announcer should win an award for worst voice ever
Ar6y9ka12 August 2022
The show is kind of funny sometimes kind of boring kind of dumb rarely interesting I don't like Kelly Ripa why do they only have two teams for an hour the ending is really ridiculous having the kids choose the prize is stupid. Worst part is the announcers voice though makes me wanna puke.

A misfire on every level
rmmil10 July 2022
ABC is in a class by themselves when it comes to making terrible game shows. I don't know how it's possible, but they somehow accomplished making a game show more frustrating and less enjoyable to watch than The Celebrity Dating Game (which is saying a lot!).

Let me count the ways in which I detested this mess:

-Filler! Tons of filler! 3 sets of interviews to fill up the 1 hour run time. This definitely should have been 2, 30 minute games broken up into 1 hour. So much filler.

-The "describe the object" round is weird and anti-climatic for a final round.

-Kelly Ripa talks to all the contestants like they are 3 year olds. Painful conversations.

-The absolute worst part, however, was the "bonus round". Let me describe this bizarre scene:

At the very end of the show, the contestants are told their youngest family member gets to "pick" a bonus prize. Either a really cool toy, or a car. First of all it's weird in that someone who didn't play all game gets to be involved in the finale. Also...what if your family has no toddler? Guess you're excluded from ever playing this game.

But, this is a "joke" round, you see it's supposed to be funny if the kid picks the toy, I guess? But it's the first time in game show history that I can remember a bonus round that includes a "screw you over" element. But that's "funny"...right? (Who thought up this?)

"Oh, that family could've gotten a car, but they got a toy car instead. Sooo funny!" Ugh. First and last time I watch this.

"A new comedy game show"... a comedy of errors, that is.
Bugsey-M14 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Seeing the promos for this show, I already knew that it was gonna be terrible. After watching it, it was far worse than I could've ever imagined.

ABC's newest game show "Generation Gap", is another one of their various game show reboots as of late. This time, it's a semi-revival of an obscure ABC game show of the same name from the late 1960s. It features two teams consisting of an elderly family member alongside a younger relative of theirs (such as grandchild or niece/nephew) answering questions relating to pop culture of their differing generations (i.e. The younger people are quizzed about a topic that the older people would easily know and vice versa).

It's marketed as a "comedy" game show, but after watching it, I couldn't find one single thing that was funny about it. It was more-or-less borderline infuriating. I assume the comedy is meant to be from how these differing generations couldn't answer certain questions correctly, but even then, that's a major stretch since the questions were arguably some of the EASIEST pop culture questions in the world from either generation, thus adding to how this game show is more infuriating than it is entertaining.

The worst part about this show has to be its "bonus round". I'm using that term loosely since I shouldn't really classify it as a bonus round. Basically, the entire gist of this show's bonus round (named "Toddler's Choice") is that the youngest member of the winning family, usually around the 2-5 age range, would pick the prize that the team won. Either a new car, or some fancy toy such as a mini arcade machine or a Power Wheels type car. The team doesn't even get to bet on what the kid would pick either, so there's really no point to this round other than to show the fact that young kids are extremely selfish and are only ever gonna pick what THEY want instead of something for the whole family.

Overall, this show was just a complete mess. It went on for an hour too long, and just made me madder as it went on. The commercial breaks were a lot more entertaining that this show ever was. It was one of the absolute worst game shows I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of bad game shows in my time. I'll be shocked if this show makes it past the first season just due to how awful it was.

what a stinker
joesorce13 July 2022
The contestants were the only good thing about this stinker. It seemed like maybe Steve Harvey got sick so they had to come up with a filler show and only had ten minutes to do so. Appalling bad, uninteresting and a total waste of time. Shame on the producers for putting out such drivel.

Where is "The Chase"
ejtr3 August 2022
Are you guys at ABC kidding me? You took off The Chase and put this trash in it's time slot. You guys better reevaluate your lineup! The chase had me on the edge of my seat every week plus you can learn a little as well as watch an awesome show.

What??? Ask a toddler to pick a prize?
hmb-5177816 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The show itself is not as terrible as it could have been.

The comedy comes from the times you are screaming at the TV when nobody gets the obvious answers.

But the final act, having a toddler pick what prize the family gets, is one of those vapid and stupid ideas that should have been thrown out of the writers room and the idiot who came up with it fired on the spot.

Disappointing and stupid.

NEVER WATCH THIS.

Being generous
bkcjohns-23-82018720 July 2022
Okay- I love this concept, I love Kelly Ripa. Episode 2 was definitely better. Hoping they work out the kinks. But doubtful there will be a season 2. The car vs toy at the end is pretty funny but I'm sure it's not for the contestants.

Saw one team member hit the button first for the steal but did not work and after the other teen answered the question I could see the elderly gentleman looking around and checking his button what's up with that, like I said rigged for who they want to will that night.

It's cute!
bioblogicalplanet24 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a cute, family friendly game show. Kelly Ripa makes a great host for a family focused game show. It's not Jeopardy or a game show with real substance, but it's fun. Can't we have a fun show without over critiquing? What's more adorable is Kelly bringing her dad on for a singing part. They have a strange way of choosing the final prize, by using a toddler to select the prize. The toddler has the final say, either they choose a new car or a toy that is geared toward the child. It's comical as the show is very comical. Give this show a change, it's light hearted, and fun. It's questions you should know the answers to. So, have fun.

Has a throwback and vintage like memory feel, mostly a watch for Kelly Ripa though!
blanbrn6 August 2022
From time to time in the summer watch seasonal game shows and decided to check out this latest from "ABC" called "Generation Gap" as I like trivia about pop culture's past. Also I was streamed in once I found out the attractive Kelly Ripa was host(as I don't watch her as much since my local station took off "Kelly and Ryan") overall the game show is nothing great yet super fun. It involves players from the same family of different generations who compete against an opposite family and each team answers questions about past pop culture from different time frames. Many answers given are laughable as the younger contestants don't know older things, or older famous people, while the older generation players don't know many of today's stars like the name of their songs or movies. Plus celebrities make special appearances and Kelly's dad Joe comes on and introduces questions, and even sings. Maybe a good summer watch as it takes one down the past and blends with current pop culture, it's nice seeing the beautiful and sexy Kelly Ripa as she's a funny and a witty host who perks things up!

No Cousin Sal as Host? WTF?
mgentalen15 July 2022
Generation Gap was originally a segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live, with Cousin Sal playing the moderator. Kimmel is just a producer on this incarnation, and Kelly Ripa is the host. There is something so unlikeable about Ms Ripa and fake.

Cousin Sal made the bit and without him, it sinks.

Absolutely awful
lvnvrcd12 August 2022
I can't think of one good thing about this show. And the final "bonus round" where a young child chooses the prize is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

Watch literally anything else. Seriously.

Just plain boring
aarontorney16 July 2022
This is what happens when you try to make a show for all ages, it's ends up safe and meh. Plus they paraded out garbage Ryan Seacrest for the first episode.

I would rather have a root canal than sit through another episode of this show! Can't stand Kelly Ripa, who actually isn't the worst part of this insipid drivel! Please make it go away!

So Bad!
lilmess-3558514 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is pitiful! Way too long, the interview of the families was brutal, and the questions made no sense.

How can you answer a question, which is also a clue?

There are questions where you have to describe an item. Two had the name written on it! Another neither generation would know.

Just skip. SO BAD!

I Wanted do Like It
alltvlover18 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I only watched episode one. Seems like the questions were one-sided. I mean seriously, one answer was Kelly Ripa and she is making faces at the team so they know it's her. Really? I will give it one more chance. Hopefully there are better questions.

Favoritism
centurytoolate27 August 2022
The family that won this episode must have been very special! Their 3 yr old was not inticed by a new shiny toy, he was offered an electric guitar, of all things. Really?!

In what world does a 3 yr old child want an electric guitar?

Of course he would pick the bigger prize, in that situation.

He should have been tempted by a childs jeep or something childlike, or something fun. Just like all the other children were, in the previous episodes.

Why the sudden change?

It'll be interesting to see what next weeks child will be tempted with.

I believe a little favoritism was in play, in this episode.

Also, please don't ever dress Kelly in that awful green toad of an outfit. It was really hard to watch her in that oversized john deere sack.

I love playing along!
Pwjrbirbwn31 August 2023
The other reviews are so miserable.

It's NOT the first time a kid picks a prize at the end (there is a British show that did it first) and the interviews at the beginning are pretty common in game shows, but I guess some peoples attention spans are screwed. It's supposed to be silly and cheesy! Anyway, cheer up meanies, this show is fun to some of us. If you don't like a show just don't watch it? Lol going and writing a bad review on just a fun loving show is awful and embarrassing.

Also love Kelly Ripa, she is wonderful and makes me happy. Please ignore the hate!

Can we get convincing people & questions at least?
Marynewcomb201321 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I couldn't stomach anymore of this garbage after seeing the adults couldn't name Mama from Mama's Family or Tylor Perry's famous character!! Could they not at least make us believe these people truly don't know? Man's Family was a long running popular show back in the 80's & the character got started on the Carol Burnett show that was on in the 70's!! This show is just another failure the Disney pushes out!!

Telly Rip Off
thom592 September 2022
Okay, own up. Who gave this show 10 out of 10. Was it you Kelly? This is an offering exhumed from the vaults of Game show's past and quite frankly it stinks to high Heaven. Here's my question: Why? In God's name ABC, why? A successful game show makes you feel part of it-it's an exciting interactive experience-you connect with the participant like they were a long lost relative-rooting for someone you were only introduced to twenty minutes ago. Unfortunately, Ripa is disingenuous at best. The comedy is forced. The laughter is nothing short of canned. You know what should be canned? You'll need every single person involved in this show to give it 10 out of ten to get it above three. My advice? Life is precious. Don't waste it here.

rigged and messed up
cacibundy18 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Just watched the latest episode and noticed that the little girl was pushing the button for the steal and it wouldn't go through, the button worked for the little boy and was taking all the steals. Another thing I don't like about the show is at the end the "bonus round" is just the youngest person of the family ( being a toddler) get to choose between two prizes typically a brand new car or some brand new toy that people know a typical toddler would want, just shows that they are only thinking of them selves and not even giving the winning team to choose a prize or have any say in what to choose. They also took out the round where they have to guess what the item is from each generation.

Waste of time and money
I don't understand what the point of this show is. Older people and their grandchildren work together to identify movie stars, TV show characters, and singers from each other's generation. Even on paper the idea sounds lame. I suppose it's all done for laughs, but it's not funny, in my opinion. Why would a child know who famous people are from the 20th century? When I was little and I watched the Muppet Christmas Carol, I didn't know Scrooge was being played by Michael Caine. All I knew was that it was Scrooge, and I loved watching the Muppets. If you ask me, I think this show was created just to emphasize people's differences. That's what society has turned into - people focusing on how they're different from each other, and quite honestly I'm tired of it. Democrat vs Republican, black vs white, men vs women. Now older and younger people are clashing. Well, they always have, but it's 2023 - when is it going to stop?! Baby boomers have this perpetual animosity towards millennials, often calling them self-entitled and lazy (I'm sure plenty of them spent most of their time sitting around and smoking pot/experimenting with drugs. Woodstock, anyone?). Recently they've directed their negativity towards gen z'ers. Looks like generation alpha is next, and GG makes them the object of baby boomers' ridicule. The money for this show could've been used for something that was actually important. All of the people involved should be ashamed.

Heaven Help Us
djbar-8406615 September 2023
This show Generation Gap on ABC is young kids with their grandmas or grandpas answering questions. Its as if they put a search out for the dumbest people on planet earth, and found them. Kelly Ripa has to pretend how great they all are. U find it hard to come up with another 300 words to deacribe how embarassingly bad, and forced everything is about this show. It us so bad I cant even laugh at it. I cant believe the contestants have to go home to the rest of their families and face the music. Kelly Ripa really is at the bottom of the game show barrel here, and I feel bad for her...i guess.

Wow Bad.
