- It's both the aftermath of Sarah's miscarriage and the preparation for Joey and Kathy's wedding.
- The Henricksons are back at home and Bill sits down with Sarah and Barb to discuss Sarah's miscarriage and, as Bill says sternly, the course of actions that led up to it.
"I made some mistakes, and I'm sorry. I should have talked to you about it...more...I'm doing better, really," Sarah says. Bill tells her it's a start, and begins to launch into a fatherly lecture that Sarah interrupts with, "I just want to put it all behind me." Bill and Barb look at each other and nod.
Barb agrees and says it's a conversation to be continued. Sarah leaves the room, and Barb exhales, saying she can't keep up the charade, that Sarah does not have any sense that her actions are entirely wrong and she takes no responsibility. "I'll follow your lead on this Bill, but I'm not comfortable with the direction this has taken."
Bill defends Sarah gently, saying that there's a right way to handle this, and that she has to trust him.
At Home Plus, Bill heads into the back office and finds his brother Joey kissing Kathy. He tells Bill that they're getting married --"Kathy, Wanda, and me." Bill congratulates them. Kathy explains that after what happened at Roman's trial, she hurt so much she didn't think she'd ever be happy again. But marrying Joey will change that, apparently. Joey says they're going do the wedding at his place in a few days, and says he was hoping that Bill would perform the sealing. Bill says he'd love to, but he doesn't have the authority. "Roman is a false prophet," Kathy replies, going on to say that Heavenly Father has left them without a shepherd and that in his absence, they chose him.
"I'd be honored," Bill says, and embraces them.
At Nicki's job, there's an office birthday for Ray. He sees Nicki standing by herself by the copy machine, and breaks away from the crowd to give her a slice of cake. He tells Nicki that he's glad she stuck around, remarking that she doesn't seem to be "the stick around after work to socialize type."
She admits she's not, really, but then asks what type that is. "I don't know," Ray says, "friendly, maybe?"
He sits down beside her and asks if his birthday wish is going to come true. What did you wish? she asks.
"Go out with me," he says. Just the two of us? she asks. Yup.
She says she can't, although she'd like to. Then she looks down at the carpet as she stands and walks away.
"Think about it," Ray tells her as she leaves.
At home in her kitchen, Nicki's son Wayne asks her why she works so much. Because she just does, she says, explaining that she works in a big building with a lot of important people. Margene enters and tells Wayne he can go to her house to watch "Ratatouille" with Raymond, and he runs off, leaving Nicki and Margene alone together...until Bill and Barb also enter. Nicki asks what's going on, and Barb says it might be helpful if they talk some things through. "What things?" Nicki says. Birth control, Bill answers.
Barb and Margene tell her that they love her very much and start to launch into the intervention speech, which Nicki tries to deflect by telling them they need to be thinking about Sarah, but Bill stops her. He asks why she didn't come to them about the birth control and Nicki begins grating a carrot furiously, saying she doesn't appreciate them ganging up on her. Margene explained that Barb thought an intervention might be helpful, which only makes matters worse. Nicki flies off of the handle and holds up the grater, brandishing it and the carrot as if they were weapons. Bill tells her to put them down, and she calls their conversation an ambush. Bill, Barb and Margene all try to talk to her, but Nicki starts to hyperventilate before passing out.
On the compound, Wanda pours about half a gallon of bleach into a load of wash as Kathy walks in. She tries to tell Wanda that she may have used a bit too much, but Wanda slams the lid of the machine shut and informs Kathy that maybe she should concentrate on getting the place spic and span for the wedding. Kathy smiles widely and nervously before scampering away. Wanda peeks inside the washing machine, then starts it.
Elsewhere in Juniper Creek Glory, one of Alby's wives, asks why she's no longer on the schedule and begs Alby not to deny her the blessing of having children. Lura chastises her for pressuring Alby, who agrees and directs her to go pray for forgiveness before he turns her back on her. Lura informs her that she has Father's ear now, and that she has to learn to respect that. Glory shoots Lura a poisonous glare as she dashes out of the room.
Margene has kids crawling all over her as Pam comes in to accompany her to the store "where it's peaceful." The kids won't leave her alone, so she dashes into the living room and closes the door between her and the munchkins, before picking up her purse so she and Pam can escape.
At Heather's place, she makes last minute housing arrangements at ASU, and Sarah can't believe they're going. "We're finally getting away from here!" she says. Heather asks her if she's sure she still wants to go and Sarah says yes, she can't stay at home. "Now that everyone knows they keep looking at me like I'm this huge disappointment who's broken their hearts," she says. "My mom can't even be in the same room with me, she hates me so much." Heather says her parents are flipping out because she's going to school in Arizona and not BYU. "This is going to work," Sarah says giggling. "I know it will."
Elsewhere, Roman is steamed that Kathy is stirring things up and gathering other malcontents to her side, trying to get them to tell lies about him. Adaleen assures him that nobody's going to listen to her, but Roman insists that she has to be stopped. Adaleen says he needs to be careful, and that she'll take care of it.
There's a new (well, used) car in Bill's driveway, and he brings Sarah out to see it. When she asks whose car it is, he dangles the keys in front of her face. He tells her that she can keep the car as long as she keeps her grades up. She offers to take him for drive. Barb peeks at this scene through the window, and Sarah curbs her joy as she notices her mother. She asks her dad if they can afford the car, and Bill smiles at her. "It's not exactly a Cadillac." Sarah then wonders if this is his way of buying her out of going to school out of state, and he denies that. He says that all he cares about is her, and that in his mind there's no mistake that can't be undone, and no plan that can't be re-thought. He tells her that if her dreams have put her on the wrong path, she can get back on it at any time. "This car can take you to ASU, or anywhere else your dreams might lead you," he says gently, adding that she should fasten her seatbelt. It's hard to tell whether Sarah looks touched or pressured.
In the next scene, Nicki and Ray are enjoying a candlelit dinner in a restaurant...on a date. Ray's talking about how he used to plant trees as part of a reforestation project in Nova Scotia, and she responds by saying she to climb trees....and talks about daydreaming in the trees about what she wanted to be. Ray asks why she changed her mind about joining him on a date, and she says she just did, is all. Then she explains that he's so uncomplicated. "I don't have a lot of uncomplicated in my life," she tells him. He's puzzled by that, but she finishes with, "That's nice."
They share a sweet, quiet moment together, and he presents her with a gift: a metal water bottle. He says he noticed that she drinks a lot of water at the office, but she doesn't have a water bottle. She holds it as if it's something precious.
On the same evening at Juniper Creek, Joey sees a flashlight in the trees and goes outside to see who it is, and can barely make out Kathy talking to someone. From the shadows, Glory sneaks up and frantically hands him a manila envelope. She tells him that his brother should know he was used, then quickly runs off. Joey considers the envelope, turning it over in his hands.
Back at the Henricksons, Lois tells the kids a bedtime story, before Bill is to give her a ride home. As she's putting on her shoes, Bill asks Lois if she's coming to the wedding, and she says no, she doesn't want to be a sideshow, but she'll watch the children for him.
Barb confronts Nicki as she's re-caulking her bath tub, and tells her that she's betrayed their trust by taking birth control all these years, but Nicki tries to ignore her by getting into the shower and pulling the door shut. Barb tells her to fix the problem. Nicki asks how, and she says she doesn't know. Barb tells Nicki that she used to feel so close to her because they shared the same purpose, to grow the family. "It's still my purpose," Barb says, "You need to figure out if it's still yours."
Outside, Margene is herding the kids and when Barb tells her she's heading off to the store, her face falls. She heads inside and bawls in the privacy of her living room. Pam comes in and sees Margene, who apologizes because she can't go shopping. She admits to Pam that she deliberately forgets things at the store so she can go back the next day. Margene can't figure out why she's so sad. Pam hands her a few Zoloft and tells her that they take a couple of days to kick in. Margene informs Pam that she's not depressed and Pam says, "Oh honey, neither am I." They hug.
Joey has handed off the envelope to Bill, and Don reads it to him in the back office of Home Plus. They discover that letter is not about Mountain Meadows but, instead, is a document from Mormon church founder Woodruff directing the four apostles to keep plural marriage alive. In other words, the church never intended to outlaw polygamy. Joey tells Bill that Glory called him a patsy, and asks Bill if he was involved in this, and Bill says no, that Glory's always had a screw loose. Don wants to release the letter to the public, but Bill suspects it's a set-up. He leaves a threatening message on Alby's answering machine, and Alby tells Lura that someone has betrayed them. "I hate Bill Henrickson," Lura says. In the other room Glory is listening.
Barb walks into Sarah's room and surveys the mess, and tells Sarah that when she's at ASU, she needs to stay on top of her laundry. Sarah informs Barb that she's decided she's not going to ASU. Sarah says it was a huge mistake, and she doesn't feel like talking about it. Barb suggests that University of Utah also is a good school, but Sarah declares she's not going to college. Barb is upset that Sarah seems to be blocking her from every aspect of decision-making in her life, and Sarah tells her that she's been making her own decisions for some time now, and she knows some of them have been crummy. Barb takes this opening to touch off a talk about chastity, and Sarah flips out and tells her to give her some space. Sarah tries to leave the room, and Barb cuts her off, saying that she does not get to dismiss her, that she's her mother and she's going to be in her life forever, and that's never going to change.
At Juniper Creek, Kathy walks in on Wanda gluing things into a book, and asks what she's doing. Wanda replies that as wives, they need to keep organized by making a schedule. But when Kathy peeks over her shoulder, she sees that Wanda has glued nonsensical bits of text and photos of Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie into the book. "That's a very nice schedule, Wanda," Kathy says gently, and Wanda thanks her as she moves Jennifer Aniston's head above Brad Pitt's and Angelina Jolie's. Kathy looks worried as she leaves, and Wanda proudly holds up the "schedule" and beams as small choking hazards fall off of it very near the baby's high-chair tray.
Kathy confronts Joey as he's fixing the truck and admits that she's worried about how the wedding planning is affecting Wanda. She said that she agreed that they would share in Wanda's care, but before they can discuss it further, Wanda comes outside with Joey Junior and sits in the driver's seat, assuring them that they can continue their conversation.
Margene calls Nicki at work to surprise her: Sarah's watching the kids so that the two of them can get lunch. Nicki tries to brush her off by saying she's too busy as she sharpens a pencil. Margene tells her to wave so she can see where she works, and Nicki realizes that Margene is already in the office. She comes over to Nicki's desk and asks to be introduced to her co-workers, and Nicki suddenly decides that a lunch date is a very good idea. As they're walking out of the office Ray calls out for Margene (aka Nicki) and Margene responds confused, wondering if she knows him. Ray replies that it's nice to meet a friend of Margene's, and Nicki introduces the real Margene as Barb. As Ray walks away, Margene angrily asks Nicki why Ray is calling her Margene. Nicki pulls her into a room and explains that she had to use Margene's name on the job application because they wouldn't hire her if she knew who she was. Margene figures out that Nicki's not working for the county clerk -- she's working at the District Attorney's office. She explained that her mother got her the job so she could pass inside information to help her father with the trial. Margene is horrified and Nicki blames Satan, explaining that Satan has a hold of her. Margene tells Nicki that if she doesn't quit, Margene's going to show her boss her driver's license.
Joey is preparing for the wedding when Adaleen drives up and warns him that Roman knows Kathy is still sowing unrest at Juniper Creek, and that she's just trying to warn him. Joey assures Adaleen that as far as they're concerned, the trial is over and they've moved on, that Kathy's simply preparing for the wedding. Adaleen says she's trying to do him a favor, that although Roman is under scrutiny he's still the prophet. "Provoke him at your own peril," Adaleen insists. Joey calls Roman the prophet of the Holiday Inn, and if he moves against them, he'll defend his family. Adaleen calls him as big a fool as Bill for underestimating her husband. "He is a lion," she hisses before she drives away.
At home, Bill tells Barb about the Woodruff document, and they wonder if Bill's supposed to hand Glory's letter over to Ted. It's only a copy, he says, but he doesn't know if it's the same letter that Alby sold to Ted. He suggests that Barb asks Cindy about it, and she's hesitant to get Cindy involved. In the very next scene, Barb's on the phone (with Bill listening in on another receiver) and she's asking Cindy if she knew about the letter. Cindy tells her of course she does, that Ted would never spend $50,000 without consulting her. Barb is floored by the amount Ted and Cindy spent on the supposed Mountain Meadows document even before Cindy adds that they spend additional funds to have it authenticated by a university lab. Barb tries to cover the original reason for the call by saying that she was just curious because she was hoping that the document was in good condition. Cindy replies that she assumes so...after all, she's never actually seen it herself. That's odd, Barb offers, to have spent that much money and not actually laid eyes on the thing. Cindy becomes suspicious of the phone call and informs Barb that she trusts her husband before hanging up to deal with the cat.
In his hotel hideout, Roman counsels what looks like two men, but is actually a man and a woman wearing a man's suit: the Greens, Roman's little sister and his brother-in-law. Roman's sister is upset that Hollis is taking on another wife, but Roman orders her to accept it. She reluctantly agrees.
Joey and Bill warn Kathy that she needs to lay low, because Roman is rattled and that's when he's the most dangerous. Kathy says one of the women is ready to go to the authorities about Roman but she needs help. Bill assures her that they'll help, but Kathy needs to stop meeting with the women alone. In another room, we see Wanda waking up to the realization that she's wet the bed. She tears the sheets off of the mattress and throws them in the washing machine.
At her house, Margene looks at herself in the mirror and decides to dye her hair back to its original color. She greets Nicki in her kitchen and informs her that it's her turn to watch the kids. When Nicki tries to say that she can't because she has to work, Margene reminds Nicki that she stole her identity. Margene points out that she gave up everything, including her career so that Nicki can work, and now she can't even go shopping. Barb walks in and Margene announces that she's going back to work, and Nicki's quitting. Barb is surprised by this and tells her that they need to discuss this with Bill. After Barb leaves, Nicki quietly tells Margene that she's being mean to her.
As Barb's prepping to go out, Wanda knocks on her door -- she's there to ask Barb how to be a first wife. She asks Barb if she's ever gotten nervous, and if she's ever had an accident at night. She tells Barb she doesn't think she can be a first wife. Barb suggests that she tell her worries to Joey and Kathy, but Wanda refuses to because they have too too much on their minds right now. Barb finally relents and tries to share all of her tips with Wanda, starting out by saying that poise is important and she should not be afraid to be a leader. Wanda starts taking notes but soon realizes that she's in over her head.
Bill and Barb meet with Ted and Cindy about what may or may not be the Mountain Meadows letter, and Ted reminds him that thanks to his efforts, Bill's getting his casino. Bill demands to see the letter, realizing that Ted has the Woodruff document. Cindy accuses them of being desperate, and Barb points out that she couldn't know, since she's never actually seen the letter. Cindy tells them they're crazy and tells Ted to show them the letter. Ted coldly brushes her off, saying he can handle them...which leads Cindy to realize that what Bill and Barb are saying is true. She leaves the room as Bill offers to buy the letter back from Ted for $50,000, but Ted says it's too late, that he already handed over the church that morning. Barb can't believe that for all these years Ted and Cindy have damned them for their choice, and now they're burying the truth? "Well, damn you," she says.
Elsewhere, Heather is surprised to see Sarah show up at work, but Sarah's only there to tell Heather she's not going to ASU. She says she lost her baby, and nothing is the same. She apologizes for dragging Heather into all of her drama, and Heather begins to cry. Heather says that Sarah used her, that she imposed on her feelings without giving it a thought of what it would mean to her life. Heather said she had to struggle with her innermost beliefs to be Sarah's friend, and asks Sarah what she's ever had to struggle with before running off.
On the day of the wedding, Wanda sees Kathy in her white dress and tells her that she looks like an angel. She tells Kathy not to worry anymore because she wants Kathy to be first wife. Kathy doesn't want to disrespect Wanda, but Wanda tells her she's thought about it and that's the way it should be. Wanda sees that Kathy has braided some flowers into her hair and asks where she got them, and Kathy tells her she'll go pick some to put in Wanda's hair. She waves at her before running off, and Wanda sits down at a keyboard and plays "This Little Light of Mine."
Nicki has packed up her things and is trying to sneak out of the office, but Ray discovers her and asks why she's quitting when he knows she doesn't want to. Then he kisses her passionately, and she kisses him back before realizing what she's done and leaving quickly.
Barb is getting ready for the wedding when Sarah comes in to tell her what happened with Heather. She asks Barb if she hates her, and Barb says no. Sarah tells Barb she wanted her baby, but God took him away to punish her for being bad. Barb holds her and tells her that God doesn't work that way. Sarah whispers that she was relieved to have lost him. "I was too," Barb admits.
Bill and the wives arrive at Juniper Creek for Joey, Kathy and Wanda's wedding, and as they're setting up, Nicki says she has to figure a few things out and asks to be taken off of the schedule. Barb and Margene are confused, but that's pushed aside when Joey comes out and announce that Kathy is missing.
In a dark barn on another part of the compound, Roman is sitting at a card table, and a man says, "Bring the girl in now, the prophet is ready." A small girl is on a swing, holding flowers as Kathy is marched in, flanked by two other women. Kathy tells Roman that people will know she's missing because she's getting married today. Roman informs her that they're expediting that very matter and brings in Hollis Green. The wife informs Kathy that she is to be sealed to Hollis, "our husband and prophet." Kathy begs Roman to relent, saying that she is to be sealed to Joey and Wanda that day. Roman told her that she'd been warned, but now she has to go where her lies can do no harm. After she's sealed to Hollis, Roman informs her, they'll go to Mexico where, with Heavenly Father's blessing, she'll bear him many children. Kathy fights them off and runs away, stealing a pick up truck and catching her braid in the door as she drives off at top speed. A truck with Roman in it races up behind her, slamming into her from behind and causing her to hit a telephone phone. The force of the impact snaps Kathy's neck, and she's killed instantly.
