While investigating the murder of a young woman, Amsterdam gives chase to one of his suspects, the woman's boyfriend. When he confronts him on a subway platform, John suffers what appears to be a heart attack and is taken to a hospital where he is declared dead. After reviving, John realizes he might have been near his "true love" in the subway, since he was told he would not age or die without meeting her. Meanwhile the investigation uncovers the fact that the woman was killed someplace else, shown by the paint under her fingernails. This leads John to visit a past lover, a painter known for using that specific paint.
