New York glue factory magnate Peter Cooper . . .
, , , deserves at least equal billing with his short-lived steam locomotive, remembered during the Peabody's Improbable History episode titled RACE OF TOM THUMB. Nationally famous for his bushy white beard during his eighth decade, Cooper was nominated as the Greenback Party candidate for U. S. President at its 1876 summer convention, when Cooper was a ripe old 83. Unfortunately, Custer's Last Stand overshadowed Cooper's Crusade against the Gold Standard, and the Elephantine Political Party rare metals hoarders first rigged the Florida election and then the U. S. Court System to install the popular vote loser, Rudder-Fraud Hayes, into the Oval Office. Cooper died of a broken heart seven years later, and American suffered under the thumb of the Gold Standard and metal misers for another half century.
