This is where this show actually gets interesting

The only reason why I even watched to this point is that it's very short. There is really nothing new to this show. It's just classic highschool drama with our awkward protagonist. But this episode really caught me off guard, I didn't expect it to go in this direction and I loved it. I hope they focus more on the superpower storyline now and I also hope that they keep up with the action and the gore.

Decent season, good finale.

Season One Review
southdavid16 March 2020
I'm going to review this as if it's the first season, a second isn't confirmed as I'm writing this - although I understand the show has been relatively successful (as much as we know).

Sydney, (Sophia Lillis) an awkward high school girl is coming to terms with the suicide of her father, her burgeoning sexuality and the fact that she might have some telekinetic powers. Her relationship with her best friend Dina (Sophia Bryant) is suffering as she's begun a relationship with jock footballer Brad (Richard Ellis). Though she too has started to spend time with her neighbour Stanley (Wyatt Oleff).

I really loved "The End of the F**king World" and this show comes from Jonathan Entwhistle who was the creative force behind that one. There's sort of a similar aesthetic. It has indie movie sensibilities, a wonderful 80's inspired soundtrack and an out-of-time sensibility, from retro clothing, cars and technology. It also shares the idea of a character narrating humorously over the action. The major change is a shift location, across the Atlantic. The shows consistently funny, in that lofi sort of way and Sophia Lillis is fantastic as the lead - as she was as young Beverley in the "IT" films. I also really like (and this might seem an odd thing to say) that the series was so short. There are seven episodes, each at around twenty minutes. We finished the show in a couple of sessions.

I would say, that there are a lot of shows on Netflix at the moment that mix the idea of teen angst with a supernatural or otherworldly aspects - presumably all stemming from the success of "Stranger Things". I'd also say, I wouldn't be too disappointed if that was it. Though I really enjoyed it, threading the needle on a second season would be an amazing accomplishment and is, therefore, a risky one. We'll see.

I loved it but this is a bit of a rant without spoilers
lilaguerreiro23 October 2020
I loved it but Netflix is claiming that the reason they are not filming a second season is because of Covid but then Netflix films two other kissing booth films during quarantine. The real reason they are not filming it is because it contains a character that is part of the Lgbtq+ community. Like Netflix is canceling so many LGBTQ+ tv shows but they can't leave the show with that

Just Ok

Loved the actors in this. Love the chick from Tragedy Girls! But after watching ALL 7 episodes I can honestly say I only enjoyed the last episode. All the others were boring build up to one great episode. Why couldn't all 6 be as good as the 7th? I will never know. I do not recommend watching this just for one good episode.

I am not okay with this ending
toddcha29 February 2020
In general, it's a good series. The focus is clear and by the end of the second episode you should know how the story will go. However, before it gets to the 7th episode there are still some unexpected turns happening to the main characters and her friends. The main character's story is relatively boring and it does not really bring too much vivid acting, mostly about her inner monologue which does not bring up tensions. Her pseudo-boyfriend, on the other hand, is way funnier than she is, not because her character tends to be morose, but his acting and storylines make the main character less insipid. Nonetheless, since we pretty much know her ability, what left unknown is why she has such power, to what extent she is capable of, and what damage she will do to herself and people. Parts of the questions are somehow answered in the subsequent episodes. As I expected some kind of catastrophy in the last episode, there was in fact not that much. Yes, things escalated a bit but not nearly close to my expectations based on the clues left in the e1 to e6. What's puzzling is the advent of a magician-like figure and it's not someone she knows of. (It would be more dramatic if it was her dad). Season 1 stops there.

In all, it's a good series, e3, e4 and e6 are kinda dry so you can catch up the plots while playing cellphones. Season 2 MUST be super good otherwise the whole series would just be a waste.

Warning: Spoilers
Am I supposed to believe all the teachers are just going to stand by while some guy hijacks the mic, abuses another student and physically assaults another. They would have shut it down within seconds.
