As Lucifer was subject to censoring while on network TV, obscenities were used extremely rarely. Since moving to Netflix, the show has been given greater leeway in this area, but usage is still infrequent compared to Netflix's other series. Co-showrunner Joe Henderson has given several interviews where he explained they do have permission to be more explicit, but deliberately decided on a course where stronger language is authentically earned by the storylines. The writers added an extra use in this episode by having Ella Lopez quickly swearing in Spanish by saying 'no más of that mierda' (no more of that shit). Still earned given the context.
When the fifth season renewal was announced, the Lucifer writers' twitter account asked fans for suggestions of common "uplifting" sayings, the more clichéd the better. Many of the suggestions appear as posters and handwritten notes on Dan's motivational wall.
Scarlett Estevez is now credited as a guest star rather than a series regular as she was for the preceding four seasons.
This is the fourth time the hapless Lee has appeared in a season-opener. For the first time, his full name and some of his backstory are revealed.
Tom Ellis revealed on Little Big Town (2019): "Season five is going to be split into two halves. Netflix is going to drop eight episodes, then there's going to be a little break, then another eight episodes."
