Visual Poetry
Mostly, Marcel Broodthaers was a poet and artist; seldom did he create films as part of his art. "Le Corbeau et le Renard" is one of his earliest shorts and for most English-speaking viewers, not exactly a comprehensible or visually interesting film. There is no special filmmaking component or idea to give the rather basic material any context; what context there is given in the title (which translates to "The Rabbit and the Fox") but is hardly hinted at within the movie itself. In general, I fail to understand what Broodthaers was trying when he made it, and it's no wonder a committee originally turned it down when the short was first made.
"Le Corbeau et le Renard" is in French, probably due to the filmmaker being Belgian - hence it would have been his native language. Mostly, the film consists of a lot of text on what looks like a newspaper, some of which I could understand but most of which makes little to no sense. If any particular praise can be given this seven-minute short, it is that the shots are nicely filmed and arranged, in the manner of a visual poem. Who knows? Since Broodthaers was a poet, perhaps he intended it to be along those lines. I'd be interested in knowing what the words mean at least, because there's really no understanding the film without being able to read French.
