- Hanson's presence in Cornwall raises suspicion and as Demelza wrestles with how best to equip the community to look after itself, Morwenna lends herself to the cause and finds new hope. Geoffrey Charles and Cecily's relationship continues to blossom, but George's sanity continues to deteriorate and Cary struggles under mounting responsibilities. The Enyses look to challenge the county's high society by hosting a ball to introduce the Despards, before disaster strikes and Ross and Ned must spring into action together.
- George's mental condition has worsened so badly his uncle Cary decided to take over the Warleggan business, pretending George is travelling while valentine is utterly neglected. Old-fashioned Dr. Penrose submits George to gruesome torture 'treatments' to no avail, until he manages to escape and is spotted to Dwight, who calls by to warn a comforting approach is needed to restore sanity. Cary can't commit to Hanson's investment, a further setback for Geoffrey Charles and Cecily. Cary closes down the mine after a collapse looks too costly, but Ross and Ned mount a -strictly illegal- rescue for most trapped miners, during which Ross has to save Ned after a far too risky jump. Demelza takes a lead in helping the unemployed, staring a primitive school for the kids with Morwenna.—KGF Vissers
