- Two teens struggle to come to terms with their secrets and how to tell the people around them.
- 'A Chapter In Life' follows popular girl Cassandra and outsider Nathaniel as they both come to terms with their own secrets.
Nathaniel hosts a house party for a few people from school, the whole time though he is struggling with his own inner demons. His best friend Stephanie tries to pull him out of his thoughts by getting him to dance and drink. Everyone is surprised when popular girl Cassandra and her boyfriend James turn up, saying it doesn't look too bad a party for a 'nerd gathering'. Cassandra then joins her friends and remarks that Nathaniel is a freak. Stephanie, who is over protective, goes to confront her but is held back by Nathaniel.
The party goes on all night into early morning. We see people dancing, James whispering in other girls' ears and forcing people to down their drinks. When they think everyone has left, Stephanie questions Nathaniel about where his head's at and why he's been so quiet. They are interrupted by James and Cassandra rowing, Cassandra accusing him of looking at another girl inappropriately. Worried for Cassandra, Nathaniel and Steph step in, only to be shouted down by James before he storms off. Cassandra insists she's fine after the blowout.
Back at school after the party, Cassandra overhears Stephanie telling Nathaniel his party was crazy, especially when Cass and James went mental at each other. Cassandra quickly forces them both into a room and tells them to forget what happened. Nathaniel insists they'll forget about it, which annoys Steph further so she leaves. Nathaniel then comments on how Cassandra had said the row was due to her drunkenness, but she hadn't drunk anything at the party. Angry and defensive, she tells him to stay out of her business.
James walks in to Cassandra's home to find her making herself a snack - peanut butter & goats cheese on a cracker. He tells her it's disgusting and to throw it away, else she'll get fat and never have a modelling career. Cassandra is visibly upset, but James' response to this is to say she plays the victim and can get crazy.
At home, Nathaniel swipes through Tinder. He aimlessly denies girls, until he decides to switch his filter to look for men. He is interrupted by a call from Stephanie. She asks about homework, to which he retorts she will have already finished it. Stephanie is desperate for a way to spend time with him so says she can do it again. Nathaniel explains he's not in the mood and they end the call. Stephanie is disappointed and deflated.
Cassandra is alone in her bathroom, time passing slowly. Eventually an alarm goes off and she picks up a pregnancy test. Her face shows her fear at the answer it holds.
Cassandra is walking to meet with James to tell him about the positive pregnancy test. When she gets there she realises he is high and mentions he needs to be careful for the sake of his career. He gets annoyed and tells Cassandra to leave it alone, to which she comments how it's okay for him to make similar comments about her. James says he wishes Cassandra was a bit more wild like she used to be, and he tries to feel her up in the underpass. Cassandra protests, they're in public, but the only way she can get him to stop is by slapping him. Angry, James tells Cass that he sees other girls and she's lucky they look good together as thats the only reason he's still with her. One more time, she tries to tell him about the test but misses her chance as he leaves her alone in the street.
Stephanie finds Nathaniel at the beach. He says he was thinking about thinks, such as whats happening with James and Cassandra. Stephanie, a little jealous, asks if Nathaniel fancies Cass and he doesn't reply. Stephanie spirals a bit and Nathaniel claims he doesn't like Cassandra. Steph pushes him to tell her who she does like and Nathaniel closes the conversation. Steph mentions she saw James on Tinder, even though he's in a relationship. She then says she saw Nathaniel on Tinder, to which he panics thinking she knows what he changed his settings to. Instead, Steph mentions that they didn't match and wants to know why he's never had a girlfriend before. Nathaniel tries finding excuses, saying he's never fit in and he's always the 'posh boy'. It's clear Nathaniel is struggling with his identity. Steph tells him he's kind, funny & attractive before revealing that she fancies him and has done for a long time. Nathaniel was completely oblivious the whole time. His response is not what Stephanie was hoping for, which upsets her enough to leave before he has chance to explain his side of things.
Cassandra is sat at home having coffee with her friend Jo. Jo is going on about a show she's watched on TV, oblivious to Cassandra. When Jo eventually realises she reluctantly asks Cass whats wrong this time, Cass replying about James and what happened in the underpass. Jo accuses her of being an attention seeker and says that Cass will probably say she's pregnant next. Annoyed, she gets up to leave but not before Cass asks her if she slept with James. Coyly, Jo doesn't deny the claim.
Cassandra and Nathaniel are at the same park, both in foul moods. They sit together on a bench and finally open up about what's going on in their lives. Cass mentions Jo sleeping with James and Nathaniel counteracts this with his best friend being in love with him. Cassandra asks why that's an issue and Nathaniel finally says out loud that he thinks he might be gay. Cassandra explains that Stephanie doesn't understand and will do when she knows the truth. Cass also explains why she can't leave James, because he's been with her for a long time. Nathaniel points out that all he does is gaslight Cassandra. She explains he hasn't physically hurt her but has persuaded her to do things she didn't want to. Nathaniel insists he's bad for her, but she explains she's pregnant and doesn't know what to do about it. Nathaniel admits he was suspicious about it for a while. They both agree they need to tell their loved ones about their secrets and offer to help each other before both realising they need to do it alone. The two find solace in each other having shared their secrets.
Cassandra invites James over. She tells him that she is pregnant and is shocked by how disgusted he is, especially as he said he could see them having a future together. He tells her to get rid of it but Cassandra puts her foot down and says she wont. James makes her choose, him or the baby, so Cassandra chooses the baby and he should leave. She is finally free of him.
Nathaniel finds Stephanie at the beach, she's still bitter after their last conversation. He tells her he didn't see her on Tinder so they couldn't match, and the reason for that is because he's not into girls. Finally realising, Stephanie finds it funny that she never even noticed what was going on with her friend. She admits she was so caught up in her own feelings she didn't think about what could have been going on with him. Their friendship is rekindled and Steph promises to be with him when he comes out to his parents.
4 months later, Nathaniel skims stones at the beach. Cassandra meets him and asks how his date with Dylan went. It sounds promising. Cassandra is now showing a small baby bump. The two seem really good friends. Nathaniel mentions Stephanie has been accepted to Cambridge University and Cassandra reveals she's having a baby girl. She teases him saying she might name the baby Natalie, shortened to Nat like him. Cassandra suddenly exclaims and Nathaniel panics there's a problem, but the baby has started kicking. They sit by the water and fade away.
