The encounter of Velinsky and Deyanov obviously refers to the disappearance of Velinsky's real life prototype, Nikola Geshev, around 9-10 September 1944, during the fall of the Bulgarian Fascist regime. There is no official information on what really did happen to him, but the main versions are that Geshev was either killed while trying to illegally cross the Bulgarian - Turkish Border, or that he escaped and started working for the Western Intelligence Services, or even that he was a secret Soviet agent, who was transferred in the USSR and lived out the remainder of his life as a KGB instructor. However there is no plausible evidence for any of the numerous versions.
