- A vacant plot of plot exists next to a mansion in Daman. The locals avoid the vacant plot and consider it a bad omen to even have to look at it. A pregnant Anjali Kaul (Vinita Joshi) lives in the mansion with her sister Palak (Muskaan Khubchandani). One day, a red veil flies in the wind from the mansion into the vacant plot and Palak goes into the plot to retrieve it. That night Palak has a nightmare that a paranormal force grabbed Palak, dragged her to the vacant plot and killed her. Anjali is alarmed and throws the red veil back into the vacant plot and it is pulled into the ground by an invisible hand.
Mohammad Asif Khan (Akshay Kumar) does not believe in ghosts (he exposes fake rural Babas with the application of science and logic). He demonstrates to the village Panchayat how fake Babas use basic chemistry applications to create a myth of ghosts and paranormal spirits.
Asif is a marble trader and an investigator. He lives with his wife Rashmi (Kiara Advani) and his late brother's son Shaan. They're invited to Rashmi's parents' Ratna (Ayesha Raza Mishra) and Sachin's (Rajesh Sharma) house for their 25th wedding anniversary. Rashmi's father disapproves of the couple as Rashmi had eloped with Asif (a Muslim) without her parents' permission, but her mother is kind to them. The families haven't met for several years now, and Asif wanted Rashmi to reconnect with her side of the family as he knows that she really misses them.
On arriving, Asif and his family face an accident. A cow comes in the car's path and Asif swerves in time to save everyone. But Shaan's suitcase goes at the edge of the vacant plot in front of which the car stopped, but no one is hurt. As the car comes to a stop, Rashmi comes out and finds Anjali and Palak living in the mansion next door. Anjali and Rashmi are childhood friends.
Asif, Rashmi and Shaan continue forward and reach Ratna's house. Sachin is not happy that Asif was invited to his house without his permission. Ratna is adamant that Asif is part of the family, and it is her decision to host him and Shaan in the house. They meet Rashmi's brother Deepak (Manu Rishi Chadha) and his wife Ashwini (Ashwini Kalsekar). Deepak is in the business of conducting Jagraata for Mata, and other religious processions and functions.
Asif and Shaan visit grounds which are believed to be haunted to play a game of cricket. While he is putting stumps into the ground, the stumps hit a buried body. As soon as the stump touches the dead body, the weather changes and becomes very dark and gloomy. The kids run away asserting that there is a ghost in the ground. Blood gets on the stumps but Asif mistakes it for wet soil and washes it off into the house's lemongrass plant back in Sachin's house.
Ratna hears someone weeping in the house & witnesses a black spirit in the house (which Asif says is her fear of shadows), Ashwini finds a wooden horse rocking all by itself in the storeroom (which Asif says is due to the wind from the open window in the room) and Deepak sees the dark black spirit. They all believe that they have had supernatural experiences. Asif is adamant that all the phenomena are explained by logic and that there is no such thing as ghosts. Ratna and Ashwini visit a priest; he tells them three ways to verify a ghost's presence. A 3 eyed coconut will start spinning in the middle of the house, A hungry cow refuses to eat food and finally the black spirit is lured with the blood of a family member and the spirit licks the blood.
When all three steps he mentioned happen, it confirms that there is a spirit in the house. Asif makes a lemongrass tea with the same plant where the blood was washed. When he drinks it, the ghost possesses him, and he begins to act like an effeminate. He wears Sarees, puts on bangles, smears turmeric paste on his body before bathing and so on. The family confronts him, and it is revealed that there are actually three ghosts who have possessed him: a violent transgender woman, a Hindi-speaking Muslim, and a mentally disabled boy. Asif's family hires an exorcist who drives the spirit out of his body; the ghost of the woman, trapped, reveals her story.
Laxman Sharma (Sharad Kelkar) alias Laxmii is a transgender woman who was disowned (as a kid) by her parents for being a boy but having all girl like mannerisms. She is offered shelter by a kind Muslim named Abdul Chacha (Mir Sarwar), who has an intellectually disabled son. Regretting that she could not become a doctor, she adopts another transgender girl named Geeta and works hard to support her financially.
When Geeta leaves to study medicine abroad, Laxmii buys a plot of land intended to construct a hospital for the poor. Her property is unlawfully taken by the crooked MLA Girja (Tarun Arora). Laxmii angrily confronts Girja, who kills her by stealth (he first pretends to return the property papers to Laxmii, but then his wife stabs her in the back), Abdul Chacha, and his son. Before she dies, she vows to kill Girja, his wife, and his henchmen. The bodies are buried in Laxmii's own ground.
After hearing her story, Asif is touched; risking danger, he allows her to possess him again. Now controlled by Laxmii, he confronts Girja and gruesomely disposes of his henchmen. Girja seeks refuge in a Goddess Laxmi's temple, which Laxmii cannot enter. However, Aasif, being human, can enter, and has Laxmii leave his body before forcibly dragging Girja. Laxmii kills him, getting her vengeance.
A few months later, Asif has constructed the hospital for Geeta as per Laxmii's wishes. He also unites with Rashmi and her family. It is revealed that Laxmii exists symbiotically in Asif's body to help him out when the need arises.
