They're Coming To Take Them Away
bkoganbing20 June 2011
Breaking Even finds vaudeville comic Tom Howard looking to save another vaudeville comic George Shelton from doing himself in with a loaded revolver. This was the Depression and a lot of folks were contemplating moves like these.

Shelton is depressed and acting kind of weird as he feels he's down and out. Howard helps him and tries to instill a new philosophy of life based on the absurd. It may just all be a little too bizarre for Shelton as he wonders just who's the crazy one around here.

In the end an answer is found for all concerned. Breaking Even isn't about especially funny lines. But it does create some absurd situations that anticipate the Monty Python troupe by about three generations.

Screwy!

I recently discovered some comedy shorts on YouTube which star Tom Howard and George Shelton, who were popular Vaudeville comics. Unfortunately, they only made a few comedy shorts, as the ones I've seen were pretty funny. While "Breaking Even" isn't close to being their best, it is enjoyable.

"Breaking Even" is a truly screwy and strange short. It begins with Shelton trying to kill himself and Howard rescuing him. However, it turns out that Howard is truly insane....and the bulk of the film is Howard proving that he's really got serious issues...even worse than the suicidal new friend.

This is a mostly one-joke comedy....one that is mildly funny but nothing more. It's not bad at all, but I suggest you try one of their other comedies first.
