- Shortly after winning a prize fight, a boxer is killed in an alley while trying to play peacemaker in a bar quarrel. During the investigation, Logan discovers that the confrontation may have been staged.
- A boxing match. The fight is called when a fighter can't see out of his eye anymore. A promoter in the crowd is angry his man won't finish. He visits the winner and congratulates him, reeking of insincerity and saying the kid is full of surprises that night. The victor is ditched by his brother and goes out with his corner man, who soon leaves him alone at the bar. A girl flirts with him but the man with her gets mad and drags her out neanderthal style. The fighter runs after them, following her screams down an alley where he finds the man roughing the girl up. Another man arrives and confronts the fighter. He shoots him in the leg, femoral artery area. His brother wakes up in bed with his girlfriend, knowing something is wrong.
Logan arrives on the scene to see the brother, Peter, who he knew as a kid. The fighter, Gabriel, has died. Logan goes to talk to Peter. He's on it. Logan tells the officer on scene that major case is taking the case.
Logan explains to Wheeler that he used to mentor Peter and introduced both brothers to boxing. They go to the bar where the bouncer, a cop, tells him he heard the screams but didn't know the guys. A street cop finds the murder weapon. Peter, with help from their manager, Gus, tries to pick out a suit for Gabriel to be buried in.
Logan and Wheeler arrive to talk to Gus, who describes the woman. Peter's girlfriend arrives with food.
Wheeler gets a call about the gun. They go talk to the woman it's registered to. She recognizes the sketch of the woman as her daughter Callie, who has substance abuse problems.
At the station, Gus picks out her mug shot. Peter wonders why she wouldn't have come forward when they announced the $5,000 reward.
They head to her apartment. They find her splayed out on the couch with track marks in her arm - dead.
Rogers tells them Callie had heroin in her system and fentanyl, which is much stronger. She was murdered.
Logan figures out that Callie was just the set-up to get Gabriel to the alley.
Outside the gym, Peter says a kissie good-bye to his girlfriend and goes inside to spar. Logan and Wheeler watch. Gus motivates through mockery, comparing him to his brother. Peter goes nuts and knocks out his sparring partner, sort of a no-no. Gus loves it.
They talk to Peter about his brother, trying to figure out who knew Gabriel might stand up for a woman in distress. They ask if he had any debts, Gus says the brothers live with him rent free.
Gus says Gabriel's last fight was supposed to be a tune-up fight for the loser, Calvin, until Gabriel won. They watch the tape of the fight, which shows Gabriel saved Kevin's eye by stopping it. It also shows an angry Calvin threatening to kill Gabriel. They visit Calvin in the hospital. He says the words were just talk. He says he owes Gabriel for saving his eye, but Gabriel never should have been out celebrating. It should have been him. No, really. Calvin was supposed to win in the sixth round as Gabriel took a dive. They try to ask him more, but he's out of it.
They go back to talk to Peter, asking if his brother would take a dive. Peter says Gabriel never carried cash, that he gave all his winnings to Peter's girlfriend Christina and she kept them on an allowance and used to live with them and Gus. Wheeler gets permission to look around. She finds a roll of cash hidden in the base of a trophy in Gabriel's room. Peter flips out, accusing Wheeler of planting it, saying his brother was honest.
Logan takes him outside for some man time. He tries to get Peter to talk to him, but he's too upset.
Wheeler talks to Christina at the station. She says the boys were broke. Gus gets 10 percent and a third, for being the manager. She says there's no way Gabriel could have saved the cash on his own.
Wheeler and Logan talk to Gus at the gym, telling him Calvin thought Gabriel was going to dive. They ask him about Ziggy Gold, Calvin's promoter. They tell Gus about the cash. He tells them about Gold's visit to the dressing room after the fight. He says Gold was smiling and that's when he's dangerous.
Logan and Wheeler interview Gold. He says he'd made a deal with Gabriel to represent him, but Gabriel said he had to talk to his business manager. Gold didn't know if that mean Christina or Gus.
Back to Christina, who knew about Gabriel's deal with Gold. Gabriel didn't tell Peter for fear of it getting back to Gus, never mind that Peter was the brother she was supposed to be dating. Wheeler starts sniffing around for a love triangle, noticing Christina's new digs at her sisters aren't exactly posh. Outside, they stop her sister, who says Christina asked to move in and that Gabriel helped her. She thinks Gabriel had a crush on Christina.
Phone records show she and Gabriel spoke every day. Talking to Captain Ross, Logan says there's no way Gabriel would cheat with his brother's girlfriend. Logan tries to dismiss talk of Peter's guilt, but his juvie assault record isn't helping. He wants to talk to Peter, but Ross tells Logan to sit out the interview.
They tell Peter about Gabriel's deal with Gold and that Christina's sister didn't ask her to move in. They try to get him to remember what they were like together, insinuating like crazy. He tells them he and Christina got a hotel room that night. Peter starts yelling for Logan behind the glass, begging him to believe him. He refuses to believe Christina and Gabriel were an item. He has a good argument: Gabriel was gay. It pains him to say it. When Ross repeats it, Peter makes him promise not to tell anyone because there are no gay boxers.
Ross, Logan and Wheeler discuss things. Logan thinks Christina is keeping something from them. They decide to hold Peter to force her to talk. It works. She tells them about a night Gus got drunk and tried to rape her when they all lived together and the boys were out. He told her if she told the boys he wouldn't train them. She begs them not to tell Peter because he can't make it without Gus.
They confront Gus. He says Christina had to go because she made them soft, just like Logan did with Peter. Gus shoves Logan and Logan refrains from punching him in the face.
Wheeler gets a message that Christina hired a lawyer for Peter and he was released. Logan remembers him saying they spent the night in a hotel. He wonders who paid. They visit Peter, who is less than thrilled to see his former mentor.
They ask him who paid for the hotel and he lies poorly, saying he doesn't remember. They visit the hotel. Gus paid with a credit card - two weeks in advance. Logan tries to reach Peter, who isn't answering his phone.
Logan thinks back to all the moments when Peter was provoked and employed the impulse control Logan taught him. Logan remembers watching Peter unload on his sparring partner, unleashing his demons. He thinks Peter put it together when they asked about the hotel bill. Peter knows Gus arranged it.
They head back to the gym where Peter is sitting in the corner, his fists bloody. Gus lies in the ring, beaten to a pulp. Peter says he was trying to get the names of the people Gus hired to killed Gabriel to get him out of Peter's way. He gives Logan the names.
Peter tells Logan the last thing Gus said as he was beating him to death: "You're gonna thank me."
