- Perpetual dater Phil Hayes isn't satisfied with the women he dates. He hears a voice in his head, and soon realizes that the woman talking to him, Annie, is his soulmate, and he hers. The two of them make plans to meet, but Phil discovers that Annie isn't all that she seems.—Gislef
- Phil Hayes sits alone at a table in a restaurant. His date Julia finally arrives and she suggests they order a lot of little things and share. Julia points out that he's looking at her weird and asks what the matter is, and Phil says that her hair is curly and her profile photo showed it straight. He show her the photo on his phone to prove what he's saying, then assures her that it's fine curly.
A woman, Annie Mitchell, speaks in Phil's head. He responds and wonders what's going on, and Julia asks if he's okay. Phil says that he's fine, and Annie wonders what is happening. When Phil says that he has no clue, Julia figures that he isn't listening to her. He excuses himself and goes to the bathroom, and wonders if he's going crazy. Annie says in his head that if he's going crazy, she must be as well. They yell at each other go get out of their heads, and the two them agree to stop talking to each other. With that Annie's voice stops sounding in Phil's head.
Later, Phil is shopping and "thinks" to Annie, asking if she's there. She says that she is, and Phil goes to his therapist and describes what happened. He tells her that his date was shitty and he wanted something meaningful but didn't get it. The therapist suggests that the voice Phil head might have been his own, and he's blamed his unhappiness on the women he goes on bad dates with. She suggests that the voice is one Phil made up as a coping mechanism to get out of a date he knew wouldn't go any further. The therapist tells him that the perfect woman doesn't exist, and Phil says that he and Annie compromised to stop talking to each other.
The therapist suggests that Phil might have dissociative personality disorder. Annie starts talking in Phil's head and he tells the therapist, and Annie suggests that the therapist thinks Phil is crazy. The therapist glosses over it and continues on dissociative disorder, while Phil and Annie mentally argue with each other. Annie says her therapist thinks she's nut as well, and tells Phil that he doesn't have to listen to his therapist. He walks out and on the street, Annie is impressed that Phil left in the middle of a session. When Phil objects to Annie listening in on his thoughts, she tells him that he's not that interesting.
Phil gets coffee, watches a barista, and then asks Annie if she can see what he sees. She says that she can't, and is relived that Phil can't see what she sees, either. Annie tells Phil that she can only "hear" him when he thinks at her, and suggests that he ask the barista out. Phil takes offense and tells Annie not to tell him what to do, and he finally get sup. Another customer starts talking to the barista, Lily, and Phil sets back down and tells Annie that it went wrong. She says that pizza can fix it.
As he goes to his favorite pizza place, Phil and Annie talk. He eats in, and Annie wonders why the two of them can contact each other. She suggests that they take advantage of it, and says that she was jealous of Lily. They formally introduce themselves to each other, and Annie admits that it's romantic that they don't know each other and are hundreds of miles away. She asks him not to try and look her up because it would ruin their "moment", and Will agrees.
The next day, Will is at work and finally does a 'net search of Annie. He finds a photo of her, then mentally reaches out to Annie and they talk about their shared interests. They continue talking about their lives and bonding, and people notice that Phil is happy. Will finally suggests that they meet in person, but Annie refuses, saying that it's complicated. She "signs off", and Will brings up her profile. He discovers that she's married, and when they next talk he tells her what he's learned. Annie points out that they never said they were exclusive, and she figures that he looked her up after all. She admits that she's married but hasn't been happy for years, and feels trapped because her husband isn't a great guy. Annie tells Phil that she's never met anyone who gets him like he does, and he says that he feels the same way about her.
That night, Phil lies in bed. He tosses and turns, unable to sleep, and finally "calls" Annie. She eventually responds and Phil tells her that he wishes she was there. She says that she is there, and Phil tells her that he can't think of a reason why she's there. He wonders what his purpose is, and Annie tells him that they're all there for a reason and nothing is random. Annie figures there must be a reason for their connection, and that one day they'll look back and see that they were following their path. She admits that the way her life is, if she didn't think there was something better out there, she couldn't get out of bed in the morning. Annie assures Phil that he does have a purpose, and asks Phil to be with her.
The next morning, Phil wakes up, gets up, and looks out the window. He then tells Annie that since they've started talking, it's been the best time of his life. Phil dresses and says that he has to meet her, and Annie says it's too dangerous for her and she can't talk to him anymore. He calls out to her but gets no response.
Phil goes on about his life with no Annie to talk to. Annie doesn't respond to him, and Phil complains at her that he's just trying to be friendly and she doesn't have to be a bitch. Phil then apologizes but still gets no response. He looks Annie's address up online but discovers that there are dozens of Annie Mitchells in the town where she said she lives.
A woman finally calls his name, and Phil realizes that she's his landlady, Mrs. King. He answers the door and she tells him that the rent is due. Once Phil closes the door, he calls to Annie saying that he needs to know that she was real and begs her to say something and then he'll leave her alone.
Phil gets no response and goes on a date. It doesn't go well, and Annie calls to Phil. He walks away so they can "talk" privately, and Annie says that she needs him. Annie says that they should meet like he said, and she's ready for her life to begin. Phil yells that it's the best news he's heard, and Annie says that they should meet in a town in the middle between their two cities.
Phil gets a haircut and picks out his best clothes, then takes a train to the rendezvous. The two of them talk about what they will do when they meet, and Annie finally says that there's a weird guy staring at her. Annie says that she's moving to another train car, but the guy is following her. She gets off when the train stops, tells Phil what station she's at, then says the man got off the train as well. There's nobody nearby, and Phil tells her to run.
Annie tells Phil that she found lots of people when she ducked into a market and lost the man. She wonders if she should get Phil a gift, then says that the man is there and screams. Phil yells to her, drawing the other passengers' attention, and a conductor asks Phil if everything is all right. Phil asks how long it is until they get to Annie's station, in Kingswood, and the conductor says that it's four hours and tells Phil to calm down. Phil sits down and tells Annie that he's coming to save her.
When the train reaches Kingswood, Phil runs to find Annie and runs to the market. He finds a pair of Annie's broken glasses on the ground, picks them up, and sobs in grief and frustration. Annie whispers to Phil in his head, and says that she came to in a dark, musty place. Phil asks her to give him something so he can find her, and Annie says that she thinks she's in the woods and just heard an owl. He hears an owl in the distance, and follows the sound into the nearby woods.
Running through the woods, Phil finds a house with the lights on. He knocks on the door, and a man answers it. Phil asks him if there's a woman in the area, and the man tells him to get the hell out or he'll call the cops. Unimpressed, Phil tells him to call the cops and talks to Annie, and confirms that the description of the man who abducted her matches the man he's talking to. Phil shoves the man into the house and up against a wall, and demands to know where Annie is.
The two men struggle, Phil yelling at the man where Annie is. He beats the man to death, looks at his blood-splattered self in a nearby mirror, and realizes what he's done. Annie asks if Phil is still there, and he picks up a candlestick and finishes off the man. A girl, Chloe. comes in, calling for her daddy. Annie comes in and tells Chloe that it's time for bed. When Phil calls to Annie, she says that she has no idea who Phil is. She sees her husband's body and screams in shock, and Phil tells her what happened. Annie tells him to stay away from them, grabs a knife, and the police come in and tell Phil to get down on the floor
Annie yells to the officers that Phil broke into the house and killer her husband, and the officers handcuff Phil despite his yelling that Annie was in danger and he saved her life. The officers drag Phil away and put him in the back seat of their police car.
The police secure the crime scene, and Phil realizes that his therapist was right and he made up "Annie". He tells the officer sitting in the front that he killed a random guy. Annie talks to Phil, saying she's been waiting for a long time. She tells him that it's complicated, and he saved her and Chloe. Now Annie's life can finally begin because of Phil. Phil says that she's a monster, and Annie insists that she only told him what he wanted to kill and he was willing to kill for it. She says goodbye and the police drive off with Phil.
