Super funny episode and quite original as Dobie --it would seem -- is interested in a new female professor (Jean Byron), who inspires him to sign up for a course on Egyptian archaeology. That's certainly what Herb thinks, especially when Dobie so suddenly wants to pack up and head to Egypt with her -- all at his expense?
Actually, Herb may have started it when he lectures Dobie about choosing the right mate. He claims his earnest son "should marry a girl who has a job and can't get fired!" You have to admit, Dr. Burkhart does have a steady gig. Soooo Herb pays a visit to the good doctor and kind of, sort of falls for her himself!
There's some clever silent film take-offs with Dobie playing Rudolph Valentino and Dr. Burkhart his secret love --in the middle of the desert? Herb's conversations with the doctor are also hilarious, and add a few bizarre Egyptian dream sequences.
Look for popular character actress Nora Marlowe as a stone-face cleaning lady. Interestingly, the professor's full name, Imogene Burkhart, is actress Jean Byron's real name. This would mark her first appearance on the series in this role. Jean appeared in numerous tv commercials at the time and was a singer with Tommy Dorsey's band.
Maynard has a smaller role here, reading Dobie's letters from Egypt to his mom and dad... which gets Herb dreaming again!
