splendid documentary
The main organ player of Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, France, plays music and tells viewers about his work, apprenticeship and career path. By now a fully adult and competent teacher himself, he tries to teach his pupils the same centuries-old skills that were transmitted to him. He also tries to transmit the values that he holds dear : an unceasing quest for excellence, love of music, love of tradition, humility before the beauties and mysteries of Roman-Catholic liturgy.
Much attention is paid to the magnificent organ itself. Some of the anecdotes are pretty funny. For instance there's a story, dating back to the twentieth century, about the CEO of Rolls-Royce dipping into his wallet and providing the organ with its very first electrical motor...
The documentary also takes on the role of a tour guide, taking the viewer on a tour through the splendid cathedral and its surroundings. External circumstances have given the documentary a special poignancy : filmed before the disastrous fire, the Notre-Dame shines with a majestic beauty, with each and every well-laid stone carrying and reflecting the music as if designed for that very purpose. I have not yet had the courage to check what, if anything, remains of the organ...
Much recommended to all lovers of Paris, Medieval cathedrals or (religious) organ music.
