- WOMEN IN SPORT SPEAK FOR GENDER EQUALITY Hijas De Cynisca (Daughters Of Cynisca) is a documentary film about gender inequality in sports, a reflection of the society in which we live. It gives voice to women who are role models, who have achieved great success in their careers and who will share their stories with us. They will expose this inequality, they will suggest ideas for its eradication, and they will tell us how much progress has been made and how much remains to be done, to change a society anchored in values that have become obsolete.—BEATRIZ CARRETERO
- WOMEN IN SPORT SPEAK FOR GENDER EQUALITY
Gender inequalities exist in all areas of our society; an androcentric society, which takes man as a superior being as a point of reference and measure, and which tries to maintain the inequalities between men and women regarding their potential, intelligence, expectations, feelings, behaviors and achievements in much of the fields knowledge.
["Guide for the prevention of sexual harassment and abuse of women in sports. Guidelines for a protocol". Ainhoa Azurmendi Echegaray (Avento Consultoría, S.L.) and Matilde Fontecha Miranda]
In recent years and, above all, following the Olympic Games in Rio, the different treatment that female athletes receive in the media in relation to men. A discrimination that is only a public reflection of what these women live in their day-to-day when performing their professional activity.
What happens in sports is nothing but a manifestation of a global problem. But thanks to its great media impact, any step taken in the world of sport to get rid of this scourge would immediately become an example to follow in the rest of our society.
This documentary aims to show the current situation of discrimination that takes place in the daily life of women athletes. We want to show how much progress has been made and how much remains to be done, in the certainty that any step taken in the right direction will have consequences far beyond the world of sport.
To achieve the viewer's awareness, it is necessary to offer real stories and people with whom to empathize. To do this, we have the testimony of women who are models in the world of sports, who have reached great achievements in their careers and who will tell us their story. Our Daughters of Cynisca are elite athletes both retired and active, two coaches and a journalist-commentator. Strong, brave, free women, examples to follow, who find in this documentary a place to express themselves, a window from which to shout the inequalities that they have found during their career.
Through the interviews, we will go deeper into the different ways in which gender discrimination manifests itself: sexualization of sport in childhood; violation of women's rights in sports; difference in salaries, budgets, resources and economic incentives; lack of visibility and different treatment in media; less recognition despite the achievements obtained; difficulties in finding sponsorships; lack of support for professionalization; absence of women in technical bodies and/or federations; excessive attention to the physical appearance of an athlete and use of her body as a spectacle; sexist use of language...
Based on this information and the data collected prior the filming and contrasted by experts in the field, we will display proposals to combat this inequality. Any progress in the fight for gender equality in sports could become the source of a global change that benefits women from all social sectors.
