Playing the Long Game - Low 7
kinglear00929 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
We've been with these characters for a while, so an episode like 'Forks' was overdue. Here we sit back and let these characters breath each other's air.

First of all, Harry Beltik is back! Harry Melling (Dudley) returns to coach Beth, who has this far been coasting on talent and dedication. It's menial study, but the same way Beth focuses on improving her game, the show spends its time improving these characters, or our understanding of them. I particularly enjoyed the time we spent with him, discovering his more romantic motives. Harry is a friend for Beth.

He cautions against her extreme lifestyle - the GM Morphy is set up as a cautionary tale of genius falling prey to madness. Using the Old Masters as thematic pieces is a terrific move by the story, and this episode does fantastic work tying Beth to the rich history and legacies of fellow chess masters.

Also, I've liked the score, but my god the Queen's Gambit has some scintillating soundtrack choices. One of my favourite moments of the series is Beth dancing to Peggy Lee's 'Fever'. It's freeing, fun and politely erotic all in one.

When Harry leaves, it's probably the best acted and written scene so far. Revelations emerge naturally; he gives her Morphy's book as a parting caution, and the pill bottle he's discovered. She earnestly tells him how much he's helped her, he tells her he's realised he can't love chess the way she does. I'm loving Anya Taylor-Joy's work.

The rest of the episode still has a smart emotional lens on. It's the little moments - when Benny humiliates Beth repeatedly by defeating her in blitz chess, she returns to bed and wraps herself up in her mother's old robe. And how the characters matter more than the chess. We don't even see Beth avenge her loss to Benny and win the US Open - we see them sitting in the bar after. A well put together episode.

Addictive yet disconcerting

Warning: Spoilers
While our protagonist has that certain je ne sais quoi, this series has fast become little more than an indulgence that I am feeling less and less good about. The lack of depth is of concern while the cinematography remains sublime, the lack of substance is annoying . The glamorization of her lifestyle and choices, without any character building and substance makes this the ultimate sort of chick flick ' and that's okay yet of the 'I am adorable stumbling around, and beautiful when pensive, the only girl the outcast the loner etc. dealt a bad hand but look at what a lovely mess I have become' had all become a bit much. The very things that made this compulsively watchable have begun to deteriorate while simultaneously being saved with good music as ' I am a beautiful mess' ensues . It feels a bit shameful. I am still waiting for something meaningful to happen like maybe she would learn some manners anything that isn't simply happening to her due to her poor choices or tough circumstances that she will Indiscriminately prevail with her beauty and brains. What good has she done for anyone or for herself that would even make her likable at this point ? She would have at least learned basic manners. Did she ever even bother to pay back the $10 to Mr S? And now she is becomes a inspiration to women? This reminds me of the Taken craze, someone taps into a deep fantasy that's played out on screen becoming a phenomenon leaving me curious about the demographics of those who are 'taken' by this series. Anyway that's my rant for better if for worse. At this point I this has gone from a 9 to a 7 based on principle-it's got something but certainly not even close everything .

It stays the same quiet line as two previous episodes. I hope it will get better because I wanted more.

Another sensational episode
evansjoshyr1 November 2020
It is hard to review each individual episode as queens gambit is more like an extended film than a series. This is another incredible part of the show where the story brings back an opponent in a clever way. He gives advise while we see how they have changed since facing beth. Then then leaving before overstaying their welcome. Like all the others, the music, acting directing etc is all excellent. A very enjoyable episode of an enjoyable show

The best written show in recent times!
ashishhsunny10 November 2020
Never relying on any cliché TV tropes, this series is consistently surprising me with its unexpected previous episode tie ins and dialogue. You see a scene in the second episode and wonder why it wasn't resolved fully.. You would be pleasantly surprised after a few episodes. And HARRY freakin' MELLING mann!!! The best acting performance in this episode. There comes a brilliant acting performance from an actor once in a while in a television series or a movie that moves you, count this as one! Watch out for this one bcs he's gonna be a prolific actooor!

The entire episode was awkward as hell and I don't know how many times i cringed in confusion. And the chess games getting reptitive.

Crossroads
8512228 June 2021
Greetings from Lithuania.

Fork, 5th episode of "The Queen's Gambit" was a good episode, that explored main character a bit deeper. Its was a slower episode but very rewarding and important because it was a good character study episode. Our main character is in crossroads and people around here (the only few there are) are helping her and tried to guide here.

Overall, with now 2 episodes left, i love to see were this road will lead here. Great series overall.

Quality diminishes with every game
blankyblank17 November 2020
This show started fantastic - fresh, uncertain with some unexpected twists and turns. But as we go along our heroine remains the same as she was in first episode. She doesn't listen to anyone, every advice is ignored, every plea falls on deaf ears. Beth Harmon has only 3 faces - the smug I'm-the-best smirk, "Stupid!" angry face of loss and slightly sad mug when things don't go as planned - time for some vitamins! Here and there she acknowledges there is more to life than chess. And that alternative life is completely empty and pointless. Maybe that's what they were going for but black and white main character really makes the whole series kinda flat and dare I say a bit boring. So far it's a solid 6 - entertaining at moments but feels like a documentary. In place of psychological drama and lunge into madness or greatness we are left with silent young woman moving around with head filled with only chess board, pieces and strategies. You wait for something to happen. Two more episodes to go, I want to see it through the end and I'm slightly hopeful that the ending will make up for this washed out second half.

Ughhhhhhh
TheCorniestLemur16 February 2021
Yep, same thing again. Good acting, production design, and decent directing, but I still don't care about anything happening.

It's still utterly predictable and nothing interesting is happening, because more or less the entire episode is just Beth training for her rematch against Mr. Cowboy that I don't care about, and deciding she wants to get off with Dudley from Harry Potter. Yeah, that's the same actor, fun fact.

Probably more fun than this episode as well.

The one specific thing I'll mention about this episode is that I did really like how the montage of the Ohio championship was directed and edited, that was a really clever idea.

But still...I'm bored. Just two left to go.
