Despite the films surrealistic nature, "My Neighbor Wants Me Dead" is based on true events that were happening to the director at the time of conception and production. The film was shot at the apartment Nick Gatsby was experiencing harassment and death threats from his disgruntled next door neighbor.
The movie was shot strictly at night and was decided to be a silent film during shooting, so that production would not disturb the real life psychotic neighbor next door that the movie is based around.
Influences for the film are David Lynch, Harmony Korine, Charlie Chaplin, Jon Moritsugu and expressionist gothic horror.
