Tom Prentiss returns to the splendid ancestral estate on the Isle of Wight after splendid aeronautic engineering studies at Harvard. However he only comes to present his fiancée Samantha 'Sam' Gordon, a pilot, whom he plans to join in her native California when she opens a flying school there. Father Roger Prentiss still can't convince his heir to take over his boat building firm, which Tom's best youth friend Michael 'mike' strong Strong helps manage, but Tom accepts to help out with the launch of a new yacht type which seems wrongly designed but will make or break the business. Furthermore, Tom learns his and Mike's inseparable youth friend Virginia Brody, a a gifted musician, has a semi-suicidal boat accident when he left, leaving her psychosomatically barred from resuming a music career, which brother-manager Matthew is desperate to rekindle.
