An enchanting vision of a land we want to believe is strange.
I think i must have watched a specially edited version of this because I did not watch a series.
I remember catching this on PBS UK. It was way back in my youth when I was (like half my generation) was kind of addicted to Japan before I knew how common and basic this was.
But putting all that aside, this was an enchanting documentary. I loved its semi-professional tone, it was one woman on a journey, straight forward and to the point. She witnesses cultural oddities as well as regular people just getting though life with their existence crammed inside a home no bigger than a camping tent.
A lot of this I suspect is a trick of editing but she paints a magically but oddly convincing portrait of modern Japan as a land at odds with itself; loosing its heritage as it sinks into modernity but not without a fight.
it has a slightly poetic but over all candid air that is never sanctimonious.
One of my favourite documentaries, and I don't think I'd feel like an otaku watching it.
