Plot

The Shroud of Wally

Dilbert

Edit

Summaries

  • After having a near-death experience, Dilbert has trouble getting his benefits reinstated. He also begins to question the meaning of life. Meanwhile, Wally is worshiped as a god by a group of marketing students.

Synopsis

  • While stopping at a gas station with Dogbert and Dilmom, Dilbert is seriously injured in a gas explosion, and he experiences a vision of the afterlife - just an empty cubicle. This causes an existential crisis in Dilbert, who sees no reason to follow social guidelines or morality, but his co-workers are uninterested as they prepare to celebrate Wally's birthday. He runs into trouble with his Boss and Catbert, who claim that his "death" results in the cancellation of his employee benefits. Meanwhile, the Boss has agreed to sponsor a NASA rocket which is to send a "capsule" into outer space - depositing a suitcase full of rubbish from Wally's party. The rocket crashes in the midst of a marketing seminar, and the susceptible audience members interperet the contents of the briefcase as a religious sign - "the Shroud of Wally". They begin worshipping Wally and protesting Path-E-Tech's involvement in the space program, resulting in Dilbert's being knocked unconscious again - this time seeing Wally in his heavenly cubicle. With NASA unaware of the rocket's crash, the Boss assigns Dilbert to create fake star maps - which, with Dogbert's "help", result in pictures of space aliens being released to the public. Meanwhile, the Wally movement fizzles out when Wally himself tries to lay down some ground rules for his religion. The episode ends with Dilbert and Dogbert pondering the meaning of life and the state of the existence.
