The Prince and the Pauper
Monty Banks plays two roles in this early starring two-reeler for Warner Brothers. He is a rumpot count taking ship to America to marry the daughter of a social-climbing millionaire for $100,000. He also plays a poor man traveling in steerage with two thuggish friends. He resembles himself so closely that there is little doubt how much of this two-reeler is going to play out.
So how are the gags? For the era? So-so. Monty would prove to be a fine comic actor and gag constructor. After his starring career ended in the US with the coming of sound and the revelation of his accent, he would move to England, where he would become a fine director of comedies. At this stage, however, he has just been promoted to lead and this is a standard comedy from a studio that was fighting its way out of obscurity. Warner Brothers would rise to prominence with.... Rin Tin Tin, but Monty had left by then. For the moment he is just one more comic with his own series, seeing where it may lead.
